  1. 1. Taste Hedonics and the Intake of Alcohol and Food

    Author : Anna Söderpalm; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Alcohol drinking; Adrenalectomy; Corticosterone; Cyanoketone; Food intake; Food restriction; GABA; Metyrapone; Taste reactivity; Benzodiazepine; Chlordiazepoxide; Cis Z -flupentixol; Diazepam; Flumazenil; Microinjections; Midazolam; Nucleus of the Solitary tract; Palatability; Parabrachial nucleus; Peduculopontine Tegmental Nucleus; Reward; 4th ventricle.;

    Abstract : This thesis includes four papers based on animal experimental work. They analyze the way in which activation of a specific motivational state - hunger- modulates the rewarding actions of alcohol and taste palatability. READ MORE

  2. 2. The hippocampal opioid system : role in spatial learning

    Author : Johan Sandin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : opioid; dynorphin; nociceptin; hippocampus; learning; memory; acetylcholine; HPLC; microinjections;

    Abstract : The main aim of the present thesis was to study the role of the endogenous hippocampal opioid system, and in particular, the role of dynorphin B and nociceptin, in spatial learning. The effects of bilateral infusion (using chronic cannulae) of dynorphin B into the dorsal hippocampus (CA3-region), an area containing a high number of dynorphin-containing neurons, were examined in the Morris swim-maze, a spatial task dependent on hippocampal functioning. 3. 3. Hippocampal galanin and acetylcholine in spatial learning

    Author : Pär A Schött; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : hippocampus; galanin; acetylcholine; memory and learning; swim maze; microinjections; HPLC;

    Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to study how the neuropeptide galanin affects the neurochemistry and functional activity of the cholinergic septohippocampal projection, which plays a pivotal role in learning and memory. This cholinergic system is strongly impaired in Alzheimer's disease and in age-related dementias. READ MORE

  4. 4. The prefrontal cortex and information processing : nitric oxide signaling studied in an animal model of schizophrenia

    Author : Kim Fejgin; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : schizophrenia; nitric oxide; prepulse inhibition; phencyclidine; prefrontal cortex; cGMP; baclofen; cognition;

    Abstract : The prefrontal cortex has been extensively linked to several cognitive domains that are severely compromised in schizophrenia. It has therefore become a key region for studies on the disabling cognitive dysfunction commonly observed in patients with schizophrenia. READ MORE

  5. 5. Inflammation in brain contusion

    Author : Staffan Holmin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The immune system is essential for host defense against microbial pathogens and for wound healing processes. Inflammatory reactions, however, invariably cause tissue damage. READ MORE
