  1. 1. Microgels as drug delivery vehicles : loading and release of amphiphilic drugs

    Author : Yassir Al-Tikriti; Per Hansson; Magnus Bergström; Matthew Libera; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; microgel; amphiphilic drug; phase separation; micropipette; Raman microscopy; controlled release; drug delivery; SAXS; Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry; Farmaceutisk fysikalisk kemi;

    Abstract : Polyelectrolyte microgels are used as delivery vehicles for amphiphilic drugs in, e.g., treatments of liver cancer by a method called trans-arterial chemoembolization. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hair cell and organ of corti responses to normal and intense acoustic stimulation

    Author : Anders Fridberger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cochlea; outer hair cells; calcium; pressure changes; micromechanics; noise-induced hearing loss; fluorescent indicators; laser interferometry; temporal bone preparation; guinea pig;

    Abstract : The principal aims of the studies described in this thesis were to develop an in vitro model for studying acoustic overstimulation at the cellular level, to define the electrical and mechanical response characteristics of the perfused temporal bone preparation, and to investigate the effects of intense sound stimulation on the calcium levels of the hair cells in the intact hearing organ. In the in vitro model for acoustic overstimulation, isolated cochlear outer hair cells were subjected to a pressure jet emanating from a glass micropipette aimed at the cell body. READ MORE

  3. 3. A gastight microfluidic system combined with optical tweezers and optical spectroscopy for electrophysiological investigations of single biological cells

    Author : Ahmed Alrifaiy; Staffan Schedin; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical Engineering for Healthcare; Medicinsk teknik för hälsovård;

    Abstract : Stroke affects around 20 million people around the world every year. Clinically, stroke is a result of brain damage due to the shortage of oxygen delivered to the nerve cells. To minimize suffering and costs related to the disease, extensive research is performed on different levels. READ MORE

  4. 4. Lab on a chip for electrophysiological measurements with control of the oxygen content : optical manipulation and spectroscopic analysis of biological cells

    Author : Ahmed Alrifaiy; Ove Axner; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical Engineering for Healthcare; Medicinsk teknik för hälsovård;

    Abstract : Stroke affects nearly 20 million people around the world every year. Clinically, stroke is a result of brain damage due to the shortage of oxygen delivered to the nerve cells. To minimize suffering and costs related to the disease, extensive research is performed on different levels. READ MORE

  5. 5. In vitro evaluation of formulations used in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma

    Author : Emelie Ahnfelt; Hans Lennernäs; Erik Sjögren; Niklas Axén; Jesper Østergaard; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Drug delivery system; Doxorubicin; Microgel; Emulsion; Hepatocellular carcinoma; Biofarmaci; Biopharmaceutics;

    Abstract : Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) causes ~ 600,000 deaths annually, making it the second most deadly cancer form. HCC is classified into five stages and for the intermediate HCC treatment, the two most commonly used drug delivery systems (DDSs) are lipiodol-based emulsions and drug-eluting beads. READ MORE
