  1. 11. Luminal nitric oxide : marker of intestinal inflammation

    Author : Max Herulf; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is a pluripotent molecule with several important physiological functions in the human body. Large amounts of NO are released by various cell types during inflammation, although the role of NO in the inflammatory process remains unclear. READ MORE

  2. 12. Colonic mucus structure and processing

    Author : Elisabeth E. L. Nyström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mucus; CLCA1; Goblet cell; Spdef;

    Abstract : The mucus layer covering the colonic epithelium creates a crucial first line of defense against the gut residing bacteria. Several lines of evidence suggest that a functional mucus layer is essential for health. For example, it is. suggested that ulcerative colitis is correlated with mucus layer defects. READ MORE

  3. 13. Aquaporins in Infection and Inflammation

    Author : Angelika Holm; Elena Vikström; Karl-Eric Magnusson; Vesa Loitto; Jonas Wetterö; Mikael Rhen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The ability of eukaryotic cells to change their shape and to migrate directionally is highly dependent on active volume regulation in cells building up tissues as well as in individual cells. Transmembrane fluxes of water via specialized water channels, called aquaporins (AQPs), facilitate the changes of volume and shape, which additionally require a complex interplay between the plasma membrane and the cytoskeleton. 4. 14. Gastrointestinal Disorders in Women

    Author : Rita Gustafsson; Gastroenterologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Abstract: This doctoral thesis has sought to clarify the influence of gender in gastrointestinal (GI) disorders. Women with different hormone profiles were investigated, their colonic microbiota was characterized, and the impact of lifestyle and risk factors for GI disease were examined. READ MORE

  5. 15. Genetic variation of tight junction structures in intestinal inflammation

    Author : Elisabeth Norén; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The epithelial barrier facing the external environment in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is comprised of several components, including the tight junction (TJ) structures observed for the first time in 1963. TJ structures, which are multiprotein complexes composed of transmembrane proteins and a diverse spectrum of intracellular components, create a primary barrier to diffusion of ions, solutes, and water and they concomitantly prevent permeation of pro-inflammatory factors, such as pathogens, toxins, and antigens.
