  1. 1. Visualization of Peripheral Pain Generating Processes and Inflammation in Musculoskeletal Tissue using [11C]-D-deprenyl PET

    Author : Mikko Aarnio; Torsten Gordh; Jens Sörensen; Magnus Peterson; Lars Ståhle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ankle injuries; arthritis; binding site; binding target; carbon-11; deprenyl; high-throughput screening; inflammation; monoamine oxi-dase; pain; PET; whiplash; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : An objective visualization and quantification of pain-generating processes in the periphery would alter pain diagnosis and represent an important paradigm shift in pain research. Positron emission tomography (PET) radioligand [11C]-D-deprenyl has shown an elevated uptake in painful inflammatory arthritis and whiplash-associated disorder. READ MORE

  2. 2. Effects of lipid oxidation on transcriptional regulation and cell death

    Author : Mikko Ares; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; low density lipoprotein; lipid oxidation; nuclear factor-KB; activator protein-1; Iysophosphatidylcholine; tumor necrosis factor-alpha; oxysterol; Ca2 ; apoptosis; lipid accumulation;

    Abstract : Elevated levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in plasma are associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis. Excessive accumulation of lipoproteins and lipids in the vascular wall is thought to lead to the development of advanced atherosclerotic lesions prone to rupture. READ MORE

  3. 3. Development of the Lund AMS facility for the detection of Al-26 -- with applications in plant ecology

    Author : Mikko Faarinen; Kärnfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ion source; injector; plant material; Nuclear physics; Kärnfysik; aluminium; Accelerator mass spectrometry; AMS; Fysicumarkivet A:2003:Faarinen;

    Abstract : Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is a highly sensitive technique to count atoms. The method has a high efficiency, which makes it possible to measure small samples in a relatively short time, usually less than an hour. During the work for this thesis, methods have been developed to detect Al-26 at the Lund AMS facility. READ MORE

  5. 5. T cells and smoke-induced airway inflammation

    Author : Mikael Mikko; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is an inflammatory disease primarily caused by longterm cigarette smoking. The disease is characterized by both tissue remodelling and an accumulation of inflammatory cells including macrophages, neutrophils and T cells, in the lung. READ MORE
