  1. 1. On the investigation of chemical parameters reflecting microbial activity linked to nutrient availability in forest soil

    Author : Madelen Olofsson; Dan Bylund; Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson; Bjarne W. Strobel; Mittuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Boreal forest; electrospray ionization; fungal biomass; hydrophilic interaction chromatography; hydroxamate siderophores; liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry; mineral amendment; aromatic acids; podzol soil;

    Abstract : As agrarian society developed, the most fertile soils able to sustain the nutritional requirements needed for high crop yield were assigned to farming, while the more penurious soils were left to uphold the forest ecosystems. Some temperate forests are developed on acidic soils considered to be nutrient poor, as much of the inorganic nutrients are entrapped in poorly weatherable soil minerals and not easily accessed by plant roots. 2. 2. Adapting Scots pine Regeneration to the Changing Climate : An investigation of the effects of seed coating, arginine addition, and planting position

    Author : Matej Domevscik; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In Sweden, new forest stands have long been artificially regenerated using conifer seedlings. While standardized and widely adopted, this approach may need to be further adapted to the predicted increases in variations in the weather, such as extended periods of drought. READ MORE

  3. 3. Fractionation of Cu and Fe isotopes in metal-rich mine sites : biotic and abiotic processes

    Author : Nathalie Pérez Rodríguez; Magnus Land; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cu and Fe isotopes; fractionation; tailings; plants; phytoremediation; organic amendments; soil bacteria; Cu and Fe cycle; covellite; redox processes; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : After mineral exploitation the residual grinded and milled material, rich in sulphide minerals and heavy metals, is often left exposed to the atmospheric variables. This weathered mine waste material can lead to the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD) which has negative effects to the environment. READ MORE

  4. 4. Plant ecological studies related to restoration of a degraded ecosystem in central Tanzania

    Author : Shadrack Eliapenda; Ingvar Backéus; Karin Bengtsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Conservation; land degradation; population growth rate; population structure; regeneration; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Ecological Botany; Ekologisk botanik;

    Abstract : Kondoa Irangi area is among the most degraded ecosystems in Central Tanzania as a result of heavygrazing, fire, collection of fuelwood and improper cultivation practices. The restoration process of thisdegraded ecosystem through natural regeneration is slowed by the semi-arid climate of the area combinedwith poor soil nutrient status. READ MORE
