  1. 1. The significance of mitochondrial respiratory function in regulating oxygen uptake and performance in humans

    Author : Daniele A. Cardinale; Filip J Larsen; David Bishop; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mitochondria; OXPHOS; p50mito; mitochondrial oxygen affinity; oxygen extraction; sex difference; hyperoxia; training; muscle metabolism; performance; HIIT; Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : The mitochondrion is one of the most fascinating organelles of our cells which has kept and keeps researchers busy in studying its origin, the complex morphology, the numerous functions, the rapid adaptations to a variety of stimuli and its role in health and disease. Exercise challenges cellular homeostasis and skeletal muscle mitochondria greatly adapt to repeated bouts of exercise by increasing mitochondrial respiratory function and content to match energy requirements and to better sustain future perturbations induced by muscle contractions. 2. 2. Mitochondrial Iron Metabolism : Study of mitoferrin in Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Christoph Metzendorf; Maria Lind Karlberg; Kenneth Söderhäll; Martina Muckenthaler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; iron; Drosophila; mitochondria; mitoferrin; ferritin; spermatogenesis; cell cycle; DFO; MRS12; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Biology with specialization in Comparative Physiology; Biologi med inriktning mot jämförande fysiologi;

    Abstract : Iron has a dualistic character. On the one hand it is essential for the life of most organisms, on the other hand it is involved in the generation of reactive oxygen species that are implicated in diseases and aging. READ MORE

  3. 3. The role of the mitochondrial membrane system in apoptosis : the influence of oxidative stress on membranes and their interactions with apoptosis-regulating Bcl-2 proteins

    Author : Martin Lidman; Gerhard Gröbner; Magnus Wolf-Watz; Philip Williamson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bax; Bc-2; apoptosis; mitochondria; membranes; oxidized lipids; NMR; calorimetry; circular dichroism; biokemi; Biochemistry; fysikalisk kemi; Physical Chemistry;

    Abstract : Apoptosis is a crucial process in multicellular organisms in sculpting them, especially during embryogenesis. In addition, apoptosis is responsible for the clearance of harmful or damaged cells which can otherwise be detrimental to the organism. READ MORE

  4. 4. Dietary inorganic nitrate : role in exercise physiology, cardiovascular and metabolic regulation

    Author : Filip J. Larsen; Jon Lundberg; Eddie Weitzberg; Björn Ekblom; Victor M Darley-Usmar; Gymnastik- och idrottshögskolan; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Medicin Teknik; Medicine Technology;

    Abstract : Nitric oxide (NO) is a ubiquitous signaling molecule with a vast number of tasks in the body, including regulation of cardiovascular and metabolic function. A decreased bioavailability of NO is a central event in disorders such as hypertension and metabolic syndrome. READ MORE

  5. 5. Counter-current distribution of interacting molecules : simulation of distribution behaviour and application to protein-protein interactions

    Author : Lars Backman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Associations of biological macromolecules with other macromolecules, with larger assemblies of macromolecules and with themselves are widely encountered phenomena. In principle, these interactions can be studied with any method able to differentiate between free molecules and complexes formed. READ MORE
