  1. 1. The role of the mitochondrion in organotin-induced T-cell apoptosis

    Author : Hélène Stridh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Apoptosis plays a central role in the development and the function of the immune system. The cell death program can, however, be inappropriately activated or suppressed under pathological conditions. Several toxins have been shown to interfere with intra-thymic processes, thereby contributing to autoimmune disorders. READ MORE

  2. 2. Molecular mechanisms of mammalian mitochondrial DNA replication and transcription

    Author : Mina Pellegrini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Mitochondrion; DNA polymerase gamma; mtSSB; TWINKLE; DNA replication; transcription; mTERF; MTERF3; MTERF2; nucleoid;

    Abstract : Mitochondria are cytoplasmic organelles in eukaryotic cells, mainly devoted to the synthesis of ATP, through the Oxydative Phospshorylation System (OXPHOS). The organelle has its own genome, the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that encodes for all the RNA components of the mitochondrial translation apparatus (two rRNAs and 22 tRNAs) and for 13 subunits of the OXPHOS complexes. 3. 3. In silico Studies of Early Eukaryotic Evolution

    Author : Björn Canbäck; Martin Embley; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : A question of great interest in evolutionary biology is how and why the eukaryotic cell evolved. Several hypotheses have been proposed, ranging from an early emergence of a primitive eukaryotic cell, to various fusion models like the hydrogen hypothesis. Within this context, relevant bacterial gene families and genomes are examined in this thesis. READ MORE

  4. 4. Targeting apoptosis-inducing factor as a novel therapeutic strategy for preventing perinatal brain injury

    Author : Juan Rodriguez; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; AIF; neonatal; mouse; hypoxia-ischemia; AIF CypA complex; apoptosis; asphyxia; CHCHD4;

    Abstract : Perinatal complications such as asphyxia can cause brain injuries that are often associated with subsequent neurological deficits. The mechanisms of perinatal brain injury are not fully understood, but mitochondria play a prominent role, not only due to their central function in metabolism, but also because many proteins with apoptosisrelated functions are located in the mitochondrion. 5. 5. Mitochondrial Evolution : Turning Bugs into Features

    Author : Olof Karlberg; Siv Andersson; Michael Gray; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Biologi; Biology; Biologi;

    Abstract : The bacterial origin of mitochondria from an ancient endosymbiosis is now widely accepted and the mitochondrial ancestor is generally believed to belong to the bacterial subdivision α-proteobacteria. The high fraction of mitochondrial proteins encoded in the nucleus has commonly been explained with a massive transfer of genes from the genome of the ancestral mitochondrion. READ MORE
