21. Upconversion Detection for Improved Nonlinear Mid-infrared Spectroscopy in Flames
Abstract : This thesis deals with the addition of upconversion detection to non-linear mid-infrared laser spectroscopy techniques. The techniques investigated here are degenerate four wave mixing (DFWM) and infrared polarization spectroscopy (IRPS). READ MORE

22. Building a coherent hydro-climatic modelling framework for the data limited Kilombero Valley of Tanzania
Abstract : This thesis explores key aspects for synthesizing data across spatiotemporal scales relevant for water resources management in an Eastern Africa context. Specifically, the potential of large scale global precipitation datasets (GPDs) in data limited regions to overcome spatial and temporal data gaps is considered. READ MORE

23. Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows in Combustor Related Geometries
Abstract : Numerical simulations using Large Eddy Simulation (LES) are applied to turbulent swirling flow fields. The swirling motion is often introduced into combustors to act as flame holders or enhance the mixing between species. Different turbulence models capture the swirling motion more or less accurately. 24. The thermohaline circulation during the Last Glacial Maximum and in the Present-Day climate
Abstract : The thermohaline circulation (THC) corresponds to the large time- and spatial-scales ocean circulation associated with the transport of heat and salt, and is known to be an important factor controlling the climate variability. The large scales involved in the THC make it difficult to observe, and therefore the synergy of numerical models and climate proxy reconstructions is particularly relevant to study the characteristics of this circulation in the present and past climates. 25. Modelling of subgrid-scale stress and passive scalar flux in large eddy simulations of wall bounded turbulent flows
Abstract : The aim of the thesis is to develop and validate subgrid-scale models that are relevant for large eddy simulations of complex flows including scalar mixing. A stochastic Smagorinsky model with adjustable variance and time scale is developed by adding a stochastic component to the Smagorinsky constant. READ MORE
