  1. 1. Role of phagotrophy in freshwater phytoplankton

    Author : Carina Pålsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; limnology; mixotrophy; phagotrophy; phytoplankton; oligotrophic; clear-water lakes; grazing; competition; nutrient enrichment; autotrophy; heterotrophy; bacterial ingestion; Hydrobiology; Marinbiologi; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : Some phytoplankton have the ability to combine phototrophy and heterotrophy within the same individual, which is called mixotrophy. In this thesis, I adress mixotrophy and competitive interactions of mixotrophs and obligate auto- or heterotrophs in relation to the availability of nutrients, light and prey. READ MORE

  2. 2. Single-cell methodologies for ecological and metabolic mapping of mixotrophic microeukaryotes

    Author : Javier Florenza; Stefan Bertilsson; Alexandra Z. Worden; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mixotrophy; single-cell;

    Abstract : Mixotrophy in aquatic protists is pivotal for our understanding of aquatic microbial food web dynamics. This thesis is centered around aquatic unicellular mixotrophs, and comprises three methodological approaches aimed to tackle mixotroph ecology at single-cell resolution: the identification of actively feeding mixotrophs in natural samples, the determination of specific interactions among mixotrophs and bacterial prey, and the profiling of two distinct mixotrophic populations based on the gene expression of their constitutive individuals. 3. 3. Flagellates in the marine microbial food web : the ecology of a mixotrophic nanoflagellate, Ochromonas sp

    Author : Agneta Andersson-Nordström; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbial food web; flagellates; Ochromonas sp.; mixotrophy; size- selective grazing; remineralisation; excretion of DFAA;

    Abstract : Nanoflagellates were found to be abundant in a coastal area of the northern Bothnian Sea. The maximum concentration of nanoflagellates, approximately 8000 cells ml-1, was observed in July, coinciding with a decrease in the abundance of cyanobacteria. READ MORE

  4. 4. Wastewater treatment and biomass generation by Nordic microalgae : growth in subarctic climate and microbial interactions

    Author : Lorenza Ferro; Christiane Funk; Francesco Gentili; Luísa Gouveia; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microalgae; Wastewater; Nitrogen; Phosphate; Biomass; Lipids; Subarctic Climate; Light; Temperature; Bacteria; Photoautotrophy; Heterotrophy; Mixotrophy; HRAP; Metabarcoding; Microbial Communities; Alpha-diversity; Environmental Factors; Biochemistry; biokemi; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Nordic native microalgal strains were isolated, genetically classified and tested for their ability to grow in municipal wastewater. Eight of the isolated strains could efficiently remove nitrogen and phosphate in less than two weeks. Two of these strains, Coelastrella sp. READ MORE

    Abstract : The influence of different nutrient conditions on the production of toxins was studied in certain fishkilling haptophytes (e.g. Prymnesium parvum and Chrysochromulina polylepis). READ MORE
