  1. 1. Short Pulses in Engineered Nonlinear Media

    Author : Stefan Holmgren; Fredrik Laurell; Derryck Reid; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nonlinear optics; KTiOPO4; frequency conversion; mode-locked lasers; ultra-fast lasers; visible lasers; short pulses; ultrafast nonlinear optics; diagnostic applications of nonlinear optics; nonlinear optical materials; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Short optical pulses and engineered nonlinear media is a powerful combination. Mode locked pulses exhibit high peak powers and short pulse duration and the engineered ferro-electric KTiOPO4 facilitates several different nonlinear processes. READ MORE

  2. 2. High Power, Long Wavelength Semiconductor Disk Lasers for Continuous and Mode-Locked Operation

    Author : Hans Lindberg; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mode-locking; thermal management; spectral properties; optically pumped; single frequency; beam quality; vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser; disk laser; Semiconductor laser;

    Abstract : The semiconductor disk laser has recentlyemerged as an attractive alternative to bulky and power consuming gas and solid state lasers. It offers compact, powerful and efficient devices with W level output power and beam properties earlier not achieved with semiconductor lasers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Novel Technologies for Mode-Locking of Solid-State Lasers

    Author : Niels Meiser; Valdas Pasiskevicius; Steinmeyer Günter; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; laser; mode-locked laser; pulsed laser; quantum dot; carbon nanotube; nonlinear optics; saturable absorber; Kerr-lens mode-locking; ultra-fast laser; picosecond laser; pulsed laser; semiconductor saturable absorber;

    Abstract : The subject of this thesis is the investigation of novel technologies for mode-locking of diode-pumped, solid-state lasers. Novel saturable absorbers are used: quantum dots (QDs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which both are low-dimensional nano-formations. In addition, mode-locking by cascaded nonlinearities is explored. 4. 4. Pulse Generation and Detection through Intra-Cavity Up-Conversion

    Author : Max Widarsson; Fredrik Laurell; Valdas Pasiskevicius; Peter Tidemand-Lichtenberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Optik och fotonik; Optics and Photonics;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis concerns two main categories: pulse detection and pulse generation, however both utilise intra-cavity up-conversion. The work regarding pulse detection deals with up-conversion LIDAR and was split into two smaller projects, the first one focused on the resolution in measurements along one line with multiple reflections, and the second focused on measurements further into the MIR, as well as performing 3D imaging. 5. 5. Generation and Transmission of Optical Solitons at Ultrahigh Bit Rates

    Author : Bamdad Bakhshi; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nonlinear optics; chirp-free optical pulses; lowpass filtering; polarization-maintaining fibers; optical communication; optical solitons; Erbium fiber ring laser; dispersion-management; active mode-locking; soliton interactions; erbium-doped fiber amplifier; Gaussian pulses;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the generation and transmission of optical solitons in ultrahigh-speed fiber-optic communication systems. For optical soliton pulses the fiber dispersion and nonlinearity can under certain circumstances cancel each other, thus allowing the solitons to remain undistorted over long distances. READ MORE
