1. Microbial Electrochemical System: extracellular electron transfer from photosynthesis and respiration to electrode
Abstract : The electrochemical communication between microorganisms and electrodes has substantial implications both for basic understanding of biological electron transfer as well as in diverse applications, such as, microbial electrochemical system (MES), microbial biosensors and in production of valuable chemicals. In these systems the extracellular electron transfer (EET) from microbial metabolism to electrodes is restricted due to the insulated cellular exterior made of lipid structures. READ MORE

2. Solution properties of a hydrophobically modified polymer
Abstract : The influence of hydrophobic modification on solution properties of water-soluble polymers in the semi-dilute regime have been studied. The nonionic ethyl(hydroxyethyl)cellulose (EHEC) and its hydrophobically modified analogue (HM-EHEC) are used as model substances. READ MORE

3. Chemically Modified Metal Oxide Nanostructures Electrodes for Sensing and Energy Conversion
Abstract : The goal of this thesis is the development of scalable, low cost synthesis of metal oxide nanostructures based electrodes and to correlate the chemical modifications with their energy conversion performance. Methods in energy conversion in this thesis have focused on two aspects; a potentiometric chemical sensor was used to determine the analytical concentration of some components of the analyte solution such as dopamine, glucose and glutamate molecules. 4. Studies of Electrocatalytic Reactions of NADH at Mediator Modified Electrodes and of H2O2 at Peroxidase Modified Electrodes
Abstract : This thesis addresses: (1) studies of direct and mediated electron transfer and kinetics of peroxidases on electrodes and the development of amperometric peroxidase-based biosenors, (2) electrochemical and kinetic studies of NADH oxidation at mediator modified electrodes. The direct and mediated electron transfer of horseradish and tobacco peroxidase were investigated on graphite electrodes by using wall-jet electrode methodology. READ MORE

5. Modified and hybrid cellulose-based materials for water purification
Abstract : The need for clean water has led to the development of several different water treatment methods as well as to a large number of organic, inorganic, hybrid and/or composite materials that are used in these methods. Cellulose, being a highly abundant biopolymer with meritorious properties, such as high mechanical strength, tunable surface chemistry, high aspect ratio and surface area, to mention a few, is exploited in the current thesis for water treatment applications.
