1. Joint disease biomarkers - discovery and application
Abstract : Dysregulated cartilage homeostasis, articular cartilage degradation and abnormal bone remodeling are common denominators in joint disease and can lead to severe disability for the patients. The molecular pathways behind the disease pathology can overlap across different joint diseases. READ MORE

2. Biomarkers of ionising radiation relevant to carcinogenesis : Dose, dose rate and LET dependency of the responses
Abstract : A better understanding of the relationship between ionising radiation (IR) dose, dose rate and radiation quality, and the risk of stochastic effects would improve risk extrapolation from atomic bomb survivors’ data. Owing to insufficient statistical power of epidemiological studies to detect excess incidence of cancer following low doses of IR delivered at low dose rates (LDLDR), as typically encountered in most common human exposure scenarios, radiobiological experiments are fundamental to describe the biological effectiveness of LDLDR and to define the underlying molecular mechanisms. 3. Mechanisms in Tendon Healing : Pain, Biomarkers and the Role of Mast Cells
Abstract : Tendon injuries and tendinopathy are common disorders, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. The overall aim of this thesis was to better understand the mechanisms underlying tendon healing, pain, and inflammation. READ MORE

4. Insulin Resistance : Causes, biomarkers and consequences
Abstract : The worldwide increasing number of persons affected by largely preventable diseases like diabetes demands better prevention and treatment. Insulin is required for effective utilisation of circulating nutrients. READ MORE

5. Solid-phase Proximity Ligation Assays : High-performance and multiplex protein analyses
Abstract : Protein biomarkers circulating in blood hold the promise of improved diagnosis, prognosis and follow-up of treatment of disease via minimally invasive procedures. For the discovery and validation of such biomarkers, methods are needed that can facilitate parallel, highly specific and in-depth analysis of the blood proteome. READ MORE
