  1. 1. Tracking single molecules in uncharted territory : A single-molecule method to study kinetics in live bacteria

    Author : Javier Aguirre Rivera; Magnus Johansson; Dmitri N. Ermolenko; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; single-molecule; protein synthesis; fluorescence microscopy; antibiotics; aminoglycosides; macrolides; apramycin; gentamicin; paromomycin; S13; translation; bacteria; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : The synthesis of proteins, also known as translation, is a fundamental process in every living organism. The steps in the translation of genetic information to functional proteins have been meticulously studied, mostly using in vitro techniques, yielding a detailed model of their mechanisms. READ MORE

  2. 2. Structural Decorations in Viruses : Unraveling Acquired Functional Structures in Icosahedral RNA Virus Capsids

    Author : Han Wang; Kenta Okamoto; Sarah Butcher; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Viruses; RNA viruses; capsid; structure; cryo-EM; Molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Life Sciences;

    Abstract : Viruses have a profound impact worldwide, posing challenges to animal welfare, agriculture, human health, and the ecosystem. This thesis examines the realm of non-enveloped icosahedral double-stranded (ds)RNA and single-stranded (ss)RNA viruses through three studies. READ MORE

  3. 3. The role of non-coding single-stranded oligonucleotides on Respiratory syncytial virus infection

    Author : Sandra Axberg Pålsson; Anna-Lena Spetz; Annika Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Respiratory syncytial virus RSV ; single-stranded oligonucleotide ssON ; small non-coding RNA sncRNA ; nucleolin; virus infection; antiviral; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is an enveloped RNA virus of the Pneumoviridae family. RSV is reported to infect host cells by receptor-mediated endocytosis, also called clathrin-dependent endocytosis. Many reports indicate that the virus utilizes the host receptor nucleolin for entry. 4. 4. Guardians of the genome : Connecting chromatin structure and genome integrity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Author : Stefanie Lena Bauer; Stefan U. Åström; Brian Luke; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Branched DNA structures arise during recombination and during other DNA repair processes such as repair of stalled replication forks. One branched structure, the Holliday Junction (HJ), is a four-way junction that can connect sister chromatids or homologous chromosomes. We show a physical interaction between the HJ-cleaving enzyme Yen1 and Uls1. READ MORE

  5. 5. The impact of cytochrome P4501-inhibitors on aryl hydrocarbon receptor signaling

    Author : Johanna Bengtsson; Emma Wincent; Ulf Rannug; Malin Celander; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) best known as a ligand-activated transcription factor that mediates toxic responses to xenobiotics such as dioxins, is also activated by certain endogenous compounds. Activation of the AHR up-regulates transcription of a large number of genes, including those encoding members of the cytochrome P450 1 family of enzymes (CYP1s). READ MORE
