  1. 1. Monocytes, Tissue Factor and Heparin-coated Surfaces : Clinical and Experimental Studies

    Author : Matilda Johnell; Agneta Siegbahn; Rolf Larsson; Jesper Swedenborg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; monocytes; tissue factor; heparin-coated surfaces; coagulation; inflammation; thrombin; cytokines; cardiopulmonary bypass; biocompatibility; migration; chemotaxis; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with inflammatory response and activation of coagulation. Heparin coating of the CPB circuit is shown to improve the biocompatibility of the surface. The biological effects of a new heparin surface, the Corline Heparin Surface (CHS), prepared according to a new principle, have been studied. READ MORE

  2. 2. Monocytes and macrophages, with a focus of Crohn's disease

    Author : Susanne Thiesen; Internmedicin - epidemiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Crohn s disease; Cystatin C; Cytokines; Intestine; Macrophages; Monocytes; Gene-expression;

    Abstract : Monocytes and macrophages are part of the body’s first line of defense, eliminating pathogens by phagocytosis or by releasing a broad array of inflammatory mediators, such as cytokines, chemokines and proteases. In humans, three subsets of monocytes are described with seemingly different functions. READ MORE

  3. 3. Microbial and maternal influences on allergic sensitization during childhood: defining a role for monocytes

    Author : Shanie Saghafian Hedengren; Eva Sverremark-Ekström; Susan Prescott; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Monocytes; allergic sensitization; maternal allergy; Toll-like receptor; p38-MAPK; IL-6; Epstein-Barr virus; early-life microbial exposure; NK cells; IFN-γ; Immunology; Immunologi; immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Allergic diseases are influenced by genetics and the environment. Maternal allergy appears to confer a higher risk for allergic sensitization than paternal allergy, suggesting an in utero influence. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of prostaglandin E2 formationin human monocytes

    Author : Sofia Karlsson; Jonny Wijkander; Christina Gustafson-Svärd; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; prostaglandin E2; arachidonic acid; phospholipase A2; cyclooxygenase; prostaglandin E synthase; human monocytes; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Biomedical Sciences; Biomedicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Prostaglandin (PG) E2 is an eicosanoid derived from the polyunsaturated twenty carbon fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA). PGE2 has physiological as well as pathophysiological functions and is known to be a key mediator of inflammatory responses. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the regulation and effects of chronic inflammation in inflammatory bowel disease

    Author : Olof Grip; Gastroenterologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastroenterologi; statins; monocytes; eosinophils; dysplasia; thrombosis; ulcerative colitis; Crohn s disease; inflammation; inflammatory bowel disease; Gastro-enterology;

    Abstract : Inflammatory bowel disease is thought to result from the inappropriate and ongoing activation of the mucosal immune system driven by the presence of normal luminal flora. In this process monocytes/macrophages contribute to and maintain chronic inflammation by being both regulatory and effector cells. READ MORE
