  1. 11. Paleoglaciology of the Tian Shan and Altai Mountains, Central Asia

    Author : Robin Blomdin; Arjen P. Stroeven; Clas Hättestrand; Jonathan M. Harbor; Lewis Owen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paleoglaciology; glacial geomorphological mapping; cosmogenic nuclide dating; Tian Shan; Altai Mountains; Physical Geography; naturgeografi;

    Abstract : The mountain-systems of Central Asia, act as barriers to atmospheric circulation patterns, which in turn impose striking climate gradients across the region. Glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate change and respond to changes in climate gradients over time by advancing during cold and wet periods and receding during warm and dry periods. READ MORE

  2. 12. Rarity in boreal stream: patterns, causes and consequences

    Author : Per-Ola Hoffsten; Bo W. Svensson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; Central Sweden; site occupancy; dispersal limitation; natural disturbances; recolonization; flight-morphology; metapopulation; habitat stability; spring specialists; Crunoecia irrorata; niche limitation; Isogenus nubecula; nestedness; longitudinal distribution; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; zooekologi; Animal Ecology;

    Abstract : Patterns of site occupancy among boreal stream insects were studied in central Sweden with focus on sparsely distributed species and the role of dispersal and niche limitations.In the study of dispersal limitation, I found that effects of an extraordinarily harsh winter in small to medium-sized streams were strongest in sites located in small streams and far from lake outlets. 3. 13. Late quaternary equatorial glacier fluctuations

    Author : Gunhild Rosqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; naturgeografi; Physical Geography;

    Abstract : On several occasions during the Quaternary, climate permitted equatorial glaciers to advance significantly. In East Africa, where the highest mountains of the African continent are located, evidence of three pre-Weichselian glaciations on Kilimanjaro, and two on Mount Kenya and Ruwenzori were recognized. 4. 14. The Weichselian in southern Sweden and southwestern Baltic Sea : glacial stratigraphy, palaeoenvironments and deglaciation chronology

    Author : Johanna Anjar; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In this thesis the Weichselian glaciation history of southernmost Sweden and the southwestern Baltic Basin is discussed, with special emphasis on Middle and Late Weichselian ice advances and subsequent deglaciations. The main study area was Kriegers Flak in the southwestern Baltic Sea where pre-Late Weichselian sediments were identified. READ MORE

  5. 15. Persistent organic pollutants in the atmosphere - spatial and temporal variations

    Author : Cecilia Backe; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tropical and temperate regions; global transport; temperature; latitudinal fractionation; fugacity; soil organic matter; soil-air exchange; washout ratio; rain; precipitation; atmosphere; spatial and temporal variations; DDT; PCB; persistent organic pollutants; polychlorinated biphenyls; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Ecology; Ekologi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : In these thesis I have studied the spatial and temporal variations of PCBs in the atmosphere and in precipitation in southern Sweden. Further, soil-air exchange processes of PCBs were investigated. Finally, the long-range transport of PCBs and DDT was studied in the Baltic Sea region and in a tropical vs. a temporal region.
