  2. 2. Aspects of locomotor evolution in the Carnivora (Mammalia)

    Author : Ki Andersson; Lars E. Holmer; Lars Werdelin; Margaret E. Lewis; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Morphology; Mammalia; Carnivora; Locomotion; Cranial; Elbow joint; Morphology; Morphometrics; Landmarks; Multivariate statistics; Allometry; Ecomorphology; Dental; Body size; Morfologi; Morphology; cell biology; pathology; Morfologi; cellbiologi; patologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, the shape of the distal humerus trochlea is analysed using landmark-based morphometrics and multivariate methods, with the aim of exploring locomotor evolution in carnivorans. Elbow joint morphology is used together with body size and craniodental morphology to characterize past and present carnivorans. READ MORE

  3. 3. Conodont biostratigraphy, taxonomy and palaeoecology in the Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) of Baltoscandia - with focus on meteorite and extraterrestrial chromite-rich strata

    Author : Johanna Mellgren; Berggrundsgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Conodonts; biostratigraphy; taxonomy; palaeoecology; morphometrics; extraterrestrial chromite; meteorites; Darriwilian; Middle Ordovician; Baltoscandia;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with conodont biostratigraphy and palaeoecology in the Darriwilian (Middle Ordovician) of Baltoscandia, with focus on limestone strata showing traces of the ~ 470 Ma L-chondrite parent body break-up. The evidence for this cosmic event includes abundant centimeter to decimeter-sized fossil meteorites and elevated levels of sediment-dispersed extraterrestrial L-type chromite found in a stratigraphical interval corresponding to the uppermost Lenodus antivariabilis, the L. 4. 4. Population divergence at small spatial scales : – theoretical and empirical investigations in perch

    Author : Sara Bergek; Mats Björklund; Teija Aho; Sarah Goodacre; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Perca fluviatilis L.; Perch; Small scale genetic differentiation; Morphometrics; Isolation by distance; Dispersal; Gene flow; Microsatellites; Spatiotemporal stability; Barriers; Biology; Biologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Animal Ecology; zooekologi;

    Abstract : Genetically structured populations arise when gene flow between groups of individuals is hindered by geographical, behavioural or temporal barriers. The identification of such groups is important for understanding evolution and has large implications for conservation concern. READ MORE

  5. 5. The development of resource polymorphism – Effects of diet, predation risk and population dynamical feedbacks

    Author : Jens Andersson; Lennart Persson; André M. De Roos; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : body shape; diet; geometric morphometrics; phenotypic plasticity; population dynamics; predation risk; resource polymorphism; size structured populations;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the evolution of individuals within a species adapted to utilize specific resources, i.e. resource polymorphism. Although a well-known phenomenon, the understanding of the mechanisms behind is not complete. READ MORE
