  1. 1. Pathogenic Neisseria : Single cell motility, multicellular dynamics and antimicrobial susceptibility

    Author : Olaspers Sara Eriksson; Ann-Beth Jonsson; Matthew Francis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neisseria; Type IV pili; Twitching motility; PilT; Microcolony dynamics; PilU; NafA; Antimicrobial peptide; Cell-penetrating peptide; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Abstract : Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae can colonize humans without causing any symptoms. However, gonorrhea and invasive meningococcal disease are serious health concerns. An essential virulence factor for neisserial adhesion to host cells, twitching motility and microcolony formation/aggregation is the retractile type IV pili (Tfp). READ MORE

  2. 2. A novel single skeletal muscle cell in vitro motility assay : effects of aging and non-enzymatic glycosylation on myosin function

    Author : Peter Höök; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : In vitro motility; motility speed; aging; single muscle fiber; myosin isoform; temperature; scaling; glycation;

    Abstract : The aims of this study were to develop a single skeletal muscle fiber in vitro motility assay, and to employ the assay in order to study the effects of aging and non-enzymatic glycosylation on the mechanical properties of the motor protein myosin in an attempt to improve our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the aging-related impairment in regulation of muscle function. Myosin was extracted from a millimeter short single muscle fiber segment directly onto a nitrocellulosecoated coverslip for subsequent analyses of the functional properties of the motor protein. 3. 3. Celluar and Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Regulation of Skeletal Muscle Contraction in Health and Disease

    Author : Mingxin Li; Lars Larsson; Tomas Winkler; Alf Månsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Scaling; myosin heavy chain; in vitro motility assay; myopathy; Clinical neurophysiology; Klinisk neurofysiologi; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Morphological changes, genetic modifications, and cell functional alterations are not always parallel. Therefore, assessment of skeletal muscle function is an integral part of the etiological approach. READ MORE

  4. 4. Chemokines and bone : lessons from in vitro and in vivo studies

    Author : Sara Rosendahl; Pernilla Lundberg; Cecilia Koskinen Holm; Elin Kindstedt; Marie Lagerquist; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Bone homeostasis is maintained by the balanced activity of bone-forming osteoblasts and bone-resorbing osteoclasts. Inflammation in the vicinity of bone disturbs the balanced bone remodeling process, which often results in bone loss. READ MORE
