  1. 1. Spatial control of mRNA stability in yeast

    Author : Susanne Huch; Tracy Nissan; Anders Byström; Anders Virtanen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mRNA stability; P bodies; mRNA turnover; gene regulation; decapping factors; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The degradation of mRNA is an important modulator of gene expression and the ultimate fate of messenger mRNA. Important steps in the degradation of mRNA include initial shortening of its poly(A) tail followed by the subsequent removal of the m7G cap. These two processes are linked temporally as well as spatially. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on mRNA turnover in bacteria

    Author : Martin Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microbiology; aprE; GlpP; glpD; mRNA secondary structure; Bacillus subtilis; mRNA stability; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Abstract : Genetic information, which is stored in DNA, is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA) in a process called transcription. mRNAs are then translated by ribosomes into proteins which, with some important exceptions, catalyze chemical reactions in cells. Since cells must be able to adapt to changes in the environment, mRNAs must be unstable. READ MORE

  3. 3. High-resolution Studies of mRNA Expression in Brain : A Search for Genes Differently Expressed in Schizophrenia

    Author : Anja Castensson; Elena Jazin; Terence Speed; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; mRNA; gene expression; real-time RT-PCR; schizophrenia; 5-HT serotonin receptor 2C; brain; psychiatric genetics; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik;

    Abstract : Gene expression differences between patients and controls can be used to find susceptibility genes and drug targets for a disease. High-resolution strategies are required because the differences between the investigated groups may be small and numerous factors may affect the mRNA quantity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Allosteric Regulation of mRNA Metabolism : -Mechanisms of Cap-Dependent Regulation of Poly(A)-specific Ribonuclease (PARN)

    Author : Per Nilsson; Anders Virtanen; Megerditch Kiledjian; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Cell and molecular biology; mRNA degradation; deadenylation; cap; poly A ; PARN; allosteric regulation; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Degradation of mRNA is a highly regulated step important for proper gene expression. Degradation of eukaryotic mRNA is initiated by shortening of the 3’ end located poly(A) tail. Poly(A)-specific ribonuclease (PARN) is an oligomeric enzyme that degrades the poly(A) tail with high processivity. READ MORE

  5. 5. Preproenkephalin Gene and mRNA : Studies of Structure, Function, Cocaine Responses in an Animal Model, and Genetic Association with Human Opiate Addiction

    Author : Karl Steven LaForge; Fred Nyberg; Peter S. Eriksson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biological research on drug dependence; Neuropeptides; Endogenous opioid system; Drug addiction; Heroin; Cocaine; Gene expression; Genetic association; Biologisk beroendeforskning; Biological research on drug dependence; Biologisk beroendeforskning;

    Abstract : The endogenous opioid enkephalin neuropeptides are mediators of pain perception and have been implicated in human addictions. The preproenkephalin gene and its mRNA have also provided many examples of tissue- and species-specific variations in mRNA structure produced through a variety of transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms.
