  1. 1. Genetic variation in the folate receptor-alpha and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase genes as determinants of plasma homocysteine concentrations

    Author : Anna Böttiger; Torbjörn Nilsson; Henrik Zetterberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Folate receptor-alpha; Folate; FOLR1; Haplotypes; Homocysteine; Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase; MTHFR; Polymorphisms; Pyrosequencing®; SSCP; Medicine; Medicin; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Elevated total plasma homocysteine (tHcy) is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and neurocognitive disease such as dementia. The B vitamins folate and B12 are the main de terminants of tHcy. tHcy concentration can also be affected by mutations in genes coding for receptors, enzymes and transporters important in the metabolism of Hcy. 3. 3. Coffee and gene interaction. The effect on methionine and lipid metabolism

    Author : Elisabeth Strandhagen; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : coffee; homocysteine; cholesterol; folate; pyridoxine; MTHFR; APOE; gene; polymorphism; interaction;

    Abstract : Background: Different dietary factors influence the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), most likely in an interaction with genetic polymorphisms. The knowledge about such interactions is insufficient. Some observational studies have shown an association between coffee and CHD, others have not. Coffee consumption affects some CHD risk factors, e. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of drug safety in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis

    Author : Johanna Karlsson Sundbaum; Eva Baecklund; Mia Wadelius; Pär Hallberg; Peter Michaelson; Gerd-Marie Alenius; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Drug safety; Rheumatoid arthritis; Hepatotoxicity; Methotrexate; MTHFR; GWAS; tuberculosis; screening;

    Abstract : Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting mainly smaller joints. Patients are at risk for complications as joint destruction, but starting treatment soon after onset of disease, has reduced the risk for complications. READ MORE

    Abstract : Background: Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVD), including myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, are the leading cause of illness and death and constitute a significant part of the disease burden in Sweden and Western Europe. Age, hypertension, smoking, obesity, dyslipoproteinemia, diabetes, and impaired renal function are considered established risk factors for CVD. READ MORE
