  1. 1. Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy : studies on methods for the diagnosis of carcinoma of the lung, bronchial mucosal damage and haemodynamic effects

    Author : Rune Lundgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy; bronchial carcinoma; brush biopsy; respiratory mucosal damage; regeneration; mucociliary clearance; haemodynamic effects; hypoxemia;

    Abstract : The diagnostic accuracy attained with the use of transbronchial fine needle aspiration biopsy, aspiration of bronchial secretion, bronchial washing, brush biopsy and forceps biopsy via a flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope was compared in patients with carcinoma of the lung. In endoscopic visible tumours the sensitivity of forceps biopsy was higher than that of the other methods. READ MORE

  2. 2. Deposition and absorption of inhaled drugs

    Author : Eva Bondesson; Malmö Klinisk fysiologi och nuklearmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tomografi; radiologi; Klinisk fysiologi; medical instrumentation; tomography; radiology; Clinical physics; technetium-99m; radionuclide imaging; radioactive aerosol; powder inhaler; pharmacokinetics; mucociliary clearance; lung deposition; gamma scintigraphy; inhalation; deposition modelling; drug absorption; absorption enhancer; aerosol; medicinsk instrumentering; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : Main objectives of this thesis were to evaluate a gamma scintigraphic method used to quantify drug aerosol deposition in the lung, to investigate the influence of two aerosol inhalation parameters on the distribution of inhaled dry powder within the airways, to assess pulmonary absorption kinetics and bioavailability of an inhaled hydrophilic solute in relation to site of deposition, and to assess the influence of a surface active agent (sodium taurocholate, a bile salt) on the deposition and absorption of an inhaled hydrophilic solute. Repeated planar gamma scintigraphy was found to provide the same information on total pulmonary drug deposition as an independent method that involved assessments of urinary drug recovery after blockage of gastrointestinal drug absorption when all of the critical parts of the methodological procedures were accurately and meticulously executed. 3. 3. Deposition and clearance of inhaled particles in patients with obstructive airway diseases

    Author : Katharina Svartengren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bronchial asthma; chronic bronchitis; immotile-cilia syndrome; tracheobronchial clearance; mucus; cough; particle deposition; laryngoscopy; lung function;

    Abstract : A large part of the population (at least 10%) suffers from asthma or chronic bronchitis. Knowledge of deposition and clearance of inhaled particles in the respiratory tract in this group of patients is essential for estimating environmental health hazards, as well as optimal effects of therapeutic aerosols. 4. 4. Particles in small airways : mechanisms for deposition and clearance and pharmacokinetic assessments of delivered dose to the lung

    Author : Maria Lindström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Lung deposition; clearance; small airways; pharmacokinetic; cystic fibrosis; primary ciliary dyskinesia; asthma; sodium cromoglycate;

    Abstract : BACKGROUND: Knowledge about lung deposition and clearance from airways of inhaled particles/drugs are essential for evaluation of health effects of inhaled pollutants and to achieve optimal drug dose to the lung. The primary defence mechanism in the conducting airways is the mucociliary clearance (MCC). READ MORE

  5. 5. Development and Resolution of Allergic Airway Inflammation in vivo: effects of therapeutic intervention

    Author : Lena Uller; Lungbiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Andningsorganen; Respiratory system; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Animal models; Glucocorticoids; Eosinophils; Apoptosis; Asthma; Allergy;

    Abstract : Eosinophils, containing tissue toxic granule proteins, are regarded a culprit cell in asthma pathogenesis. Using animal and human experimental models of asthma effects on eosinophilic airway inflammation were investigated in vivo. READ MORE
