  1. 1. Development and application of competing risks and multi-state models in cancer epidemiology

    Author : Nikolaos Skourlis; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Competing risks and multi-state models allow us to study complex disease settings and answer composite research questions and should be used more widely in epidemiology. This thesis aims to explore the competing risks and multi-state models areas using flexible parametric survival models (FPSMs), studying several aspects, such as the choice of timescale, choice of multi-state structure, sharing information across transitions by imposing restrictions in the estimation of the parameters, as well as communicating the results of such models to a wider audience and evaluating the use of recurrent multi-state structures in the area of recurrent events when a terminal event is present. 2. 2. Pharmacometric evaluation and improvement of models and study designs - applied in diabetes

    Author : Moustafa M. A. Ibrahim; Mats O. Karlsson; Maria C. Kjellsson; Paolo Magni; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Pharmacometric models are increasingly used to improve the efficiency of the drug development process and increase our understanding of the studied underlying pathophysiological system. These models require assumptions for handling different types of data and the different model components, and the appropriateness of such assumptions must be carefully inspected for unbiased conclusions. 3. 3. Component reliability importance indices for maintenance optimization of electrical networks

    Author : Patrik Hilber; Roland Eriksson; Lina Bertling; Gerd Kjolle; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Electrical power technology; Reliability Importance Index; Maintenance Optimization; Asset Management; Customer Interruption Cost; Reliability Centred Maintenance RCM ; Reliability Centered Asset Management RCAM ; Monte Carlo Simulation; Elkraftteknik; Electric power engineering; Elkraftteknik;

    Abstract : Maximum asset performance is one of the major goals for electric power system managers. To reach this goal minimal life cycle cost and maintenance optimization become crucial while meeting demands from customers and regulators. READ MORE

  4. 4. Wolverine ecology and conservation in the Western United States

    Author : Robert Michael Inman; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Successful conservation of rare species requires an understanding of the niche, knowledge of the scale over which a viable population exists, and a system that provides adequate funding to take the necessary actions. I radio-marked wolverines in the Yellowstone Ecosystem and examined spatial ecology and reproductive chronology from an evolutionary perspective to better define the wolverine niche. READ MORE

  5. 5. Survivorship in Hodgkin lymphoma : childbearing and treatment-related disease

    Author : Caroline E Weibull; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Cancer is often considered a disease with, historically, poor survival that affects middle-aged and elderly individuals. Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a lymphatic malignancy that affects both young and old individuals, with the age-specific incidence curve having its first peak at ages 20-30 years. READ MORE
