  1. 11. Fabrication of nanocellulose-based materials : Liquid crystalline phase formation and design of inorganic–nanocellulose hybrids

    Author : Christina Schütz; Lennart Bergström; Germán Salazar-Alvarez; Mark MacLachlan; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials Chemistry; materialkemi;

    Abstract : The increasing need to replace fossil fuels as a source of energy and raw material is resulting in extensive research efforts towards identifying and developing high performance materials and devices based on renewable sources. Cellulose being the most versatile and abundant biopolymer in nature is one of the obvious choices. READ MORE

  2. 12. Closed-loop strategy for valorization of starch : From starch to functionalized starch biomaterials and bioplastics

    Author : Duo Wu; Minna Hakkarainen; Elisabetta Ranucci; KTH; []

    Abstract : The desire to utilize renewable resources and avoid wastes drives us to develop new concepts for material design. Non-edible starch feedstocks and starch bioplastic wastes were previously considered useless. READ MORE

  3. 13. On the multifunctional performance of structural batteries

    Author : David Carlstedt; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Modelling; Multifunctional composites; Electrical properties; Carbon fibre reinforced plastics; Mechanical properties; Energy storage;

    Abstract : The structural battery composite is a composite material that can store electrical energy (i.e. work as a battery) while simultaneously provide mechanical integrity in a structural system. Due to its inherent ability to store energy this material offers significant weight savings on a system level. READ MORE

  4. 14. Environment-Sensitive Multifunctional Drug Delivery Systems

    Author : Jian Qin; Mamoun Muhammed; Marcus Textor; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Materials chemistry; Materialkemi;

    Abstract : Drug delivery systems (DDS) with multiple functionalities such as environment-sensitive drug release mechanisms and visualization agents have motivated the biomedical community as well as materials chemists for more than a decade. This dissertation is concerned with the development of nanoparticles for multifunctional DDS  to tackle several crucial challenges in these complex systems, including polymeric nanospheres which respond to temperature change, superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles/polymeric composite for magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents and drug carriers, immunoresponse of nanomaterials and injectable magnetic field sensitive ferrogels.
