  1. 1. The Multifunctional Pipette. A Microfluidic Technology for the Biosciences

    Author : Alar Ainla; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; microfluidic superfusion; microfluidic temperature sensing.; microfluidic dilution; hydrodynamic flow confinement; microfluidic mixer; supported lipid membranes; single-cell analysis; Microfluidics; microfabrication; PDMS;

    Abstract : The theme of the work described in this thesis is the generation and application of liquid microenvironments in chemistry and bioscience using microfluidic devices. First, a computer controlled multi-stage dilution system to generate time-dependent chemical waves was developed, and its application was demonstrated on model biomembranes. READ MORE

  2. 2. Membrane-Polymer Interactions in Lipid Vesicles

    Author : Ilona Wegrzyn; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; lipid nanotube; liposome; multifunctional pipette; PNIPAAm; lipid bilayer; giant unilamellar vesicle;

    Abstract : Membrane related biological processes are commonly investigated in artificial biomimetic experimental systems. One of the most versatile models is based upon giant unilamellar phospholipid vesicles (liposomes), which are artificially generated spherical lipid structures in an aqueous environment. READ MORE

  3. 3. Microfluidics based techniques for electrophysiological studies of cells

    Author : Aikeremu Ahemaiti; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis work investigates the application of microfluidics to perform electrophysiological studies on cells, including investigations of the effect of cholesterol on the dynamic ion permeability of TRPV1 ion channels, and the application of a microfluidic device, the multifunctional pipette, in electrophysiological studies on brain slices. In the first part of this thesis, Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells overexpressing the TRPV1 ion channel were used in a dynamic ion permeability study, where the activation properties of the TRPV1 ion channel were investigated using the patch clamp technique after depletion of membrane cholesterol. 4. 4. A gastight microfluidic system combined with optical tweezers and optical spectroscopy for electrophysiological investigations of single biological cells

    Author : Ahmed Alrifaiy; Staffan Schedin; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical Engineering for Healthcare; Medicinsk teknik för hälsovård;

    Abstract : Stroke affects around 20 million people around the world every year. Clinically, stroke is a result of brain damage due to the shortage of oxygen delivered to the nerve cells. To minimize suffering and costs related to the disease, extensive research is performed on different levels. READ MORE

  5. 5. Lab on a chip for electrophysiological measurements with control of the oxygen content : optical manipulation and spectroscopic analysis of biological cells

    Author : Ahmed Alrifaiy; Ove Axner; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Medical Engineering for Healthcare; Medicinsk teknik för hälsovård;

    Abstract : Stroke affects nearly 20 million people around the world every year. Clinically, stroke is a result of brain damage due to the shortage of oxygen delivered to the nerve cells. To minimize suffering and costs related to the disease, extensive research is performed on different levels. READ MORE
