6. Multimode resonant X-ray scattering of free molecules
Abstract : This thesis is focused on the role that nuclear dynamics plays in the formation of X-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of multimode free molecules. A combined approach based on ab initio electronic structure methods and quantum nuclear wave packet dynamics is applied to two systems -- water and methanol in the gas phase. READ MORE

7. Parametric interactions with signals and the vacuum
Abstract : In this thesis I present different experiments on superconducting circuits exploring parametric interactions with external signals and the vacuum in the microwave regime. These parametric processes are the result of the periodic modulation of a property of a system which results in different interactions. READ MORE

8. Designs and simulations of silicon-based microphotonic devices
Abstract : The characteristics of a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) rib waveguide, including the bending loss of a multimode bent waveguide and the birefringence of a rib waveguide, are analyzed by using a finite-difference method (FDM). Based on a detailed analysis for a multimode bent waveguide, an appropriately designed multimode bent waveguide for reducing effectively the bending loss of the fundamental mode is realized. 9. Design and Evaluation of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers for Microwave Applications
Abstract : With the rapid developments of wireless communication networks such as cellular systems for mobile communication and wireless local area networks, as well as developments in radars and defence systems, there is an increasing demand for efficient and cost-effective transmission and distribution of RF and microwave signals. In this respect, fiber optics provide advantages such as low loss, mechanical flexibility, low weight, and natural immunity to electromagnetic interference, enabling densely spaced and electrically isolated transmission paths. 10. Mode and Polarization Control in VCSELs using Surface Structures
Abstract : The vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is a novel, low-cost light source with many attractive performance characteristics, such as low operating current, circular output beam, and high modulation bandwidth at low currents. This together with its easy integration into two-dimensional arrays has made it an established transmitter in short-distance single and parallel fiber-optical links, and new applications are continuously arising.
