    Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS) with now more than 600 documented cases in the medical literature. Long-term remission can be achieved with this therapy, but when is it justified to claim that a patient is cured from MS? In attempt to answer this question, the outcome of the Swedish patients is described, mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect are discussed and new tools for demonstration of absence of disease have been developed. 2. 2. Biomarkers and Disease Activity in Multiple Sclerosis : A cohort study on patients with clinically isolated syndrome and relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis

    Author : Irene Håkansson; Jan Ernerudh; Charlotte Dahle; Magnus Vrethem; Jan Lycke; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on disease activity in clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) and newly diagnosed relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The papers are based on data from 41 patients in a prospective longitudinal cohort study. All patients were untreated at baseline. READ MORE

  3. 3. Longitudinal Models for Quantifying Disease and Therapeutic Response in Multiple Sclerosis

    Author : Ana M. Novakovic; Mats O. Karlsson; Etienne Pigeolet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nonlinear mixed-effects models; pharmacometrics; NONMEM; multiple sclerosis; cladribine; EDSS; item response theory; relapse rate; absolute lymphocyte count; total volume T2 lesions; burden of disease; power; sample size; Pharmaceutical Science; Farmaceutisk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) and development of new therapies have been challenging due to the disease complexity and slow progression, and the limited sensitivity of available clinical outcomes. Modeling and simulation has become an increasingly important component in drug development and in post-marketing optimization of use of medication. READ MORE

  4. 4. Diagnostic, Prognostic, and Disease Activity Biomarkers in Multiple Sclerosis

    Author : Igal Rosenstein; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Multiple Sclerosis; Cerebrospinal Fluid; Biomarkers; Diagnosis; Prognosis;

    Abstract : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common immune-mediated disease of the central nervous system. While benign cases exist, if left untreated, MS results in the compounding accumulation of disability. READ MORE
