  1. 21. The muscle cytoskeleton of mice and men : Structural remodelling in desmin myopathies

    Author : Lena Carlsson; Lars-Eric Thornell; Anders Arnér; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; desmin; nestin; synemin; paranemin; plectin; αB-crystallin; skeletal muscle; heart muscle; myotendinous junction; motor endplate; costamere; anatomi; Human Anatomy;

    Abstract : The muscle fibre cytoskeleton of skeletal and heart muscle cells is composed mainly of intermediate filaments (IFs), that surround the myofibrils and connect the peripheral myofibrils with the sarcolemma and the nuclear membrane. Desmin is the first muscle specific IF protein to be produced in developing muscles and is the main IF protein in mature muscles. READ MORE

  2. 22. Adverse Muscle Composition : Revisiting Sarcopenia in General Population and Liver Disease using Magnetic Resonance Imaging

    Author : Jennifer Linge; Mattias Ekstedt; Patrik Nasr; Martin Henriksson; Tommy Cederholm; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Sarcopenia - from the Greek words 'sarx' (flesh) and 'penia' (loss) - was, when coined in 1989, a term denoting the decline in muscle mass and strength that occurs with aging. Such definition implies everyone suffers from sarcopenia to varying degrees, which naturally makes studying sarcopenia challenging. READ MORE

  3. 23. Lung Function, Respiratory Muscle Strength and Effects of Breathing Exercises in Cardiac Surgery Patients

    Author : Charlotte Urell; Margareta Emtner; Elisabeth Westerdahl; Hans Hedenström; Agneta Ståhle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Breathing exercises; Cardiac surgery; Deep breathing; Lung function; Oxygenation; Physical therapy; Positive expiratory pressure; Spirometry; Respiratory muscle strength; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Background: Breathing exercises are widely used after cardiac surgery. The duration of exercises in the immediate postoperative period is not fully evaluated and only limited data regarding the effects of home-based breathing exercises after discharge from hospital have been published. 4. 24. Physical Exercise in Cystic Fibrosis -studies on muscle strength, oxygen uptake and lung function in young adult patients

    Author : Margareta E Sahlberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Lung function; muscle strength; exercise capacity; endurance; resistance training;

    Abstract : Muscular strength, lung function and exercise capacity are internationally reported to be markedly impaired in adult patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Since 20 years physical exercise is one important part in the treatment of patients with CF in Sweden. Handgrip strength is reported to relate to nutrition and activity of daily living. READ MORE

  5. 25. Integration of signalling in smooth muscle caveolae

    Author : Yulia Shakirova; Cellulär biomekanik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Caveola; caveolin; detrusor; cavin; smooth muscle contractility; remodelling; NO; vascular dysfunction; smooth muscle; erectile dysfunction;

    Abstract : Caveolae and lipid rafts are plasma membrane microdomains that are considered to play a role in cellular signalling. Caveolins and cavins as well as cholesterol are required for the structure and function of caveolae. The papers summarized in this thesis examine the role of caveolae in smooth muscle function.
