1. Muscle strength and motor function in neuromuscular disorders. A clinical study of children and adolescents with spinal muscular atrophy, myotonic dystrophy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and amyoplasia
Abstract : Aim: The aims of this study were to investigate muscle strength and motor function in children and adolescents with four neuromuscular disorders; 1) spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), 2) myotonic dystrophy (DM), 3) Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD and 4) the amyoplasia form of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. Further: 1) to analyze compensatory maneuvers due to muscle weakness in individuals with SMA, 2) to correlate motor function in individuals with DM with the size of the mutation, 3) to evaluate the long-term side effects and effects on muscle strength, motor function, vital capacity and development of scoliosis in boys with DMD treated with low-dose prednisone, and 4) to investigate how muscle strength and joint contractures affect motor function in individuals with amyoplasia and to relate current status to joint position at birth. 2. Dynamic Changes in the Peripheral and the Central Nervous Systems in Patients with Prior Polio
Abstract : After the acute spell of poliomyelitis, patients commonly suffers from sequelae of weakness. Some of these patients experience new weakness after a time period of stable symptoms. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate the possible mechanisms for persistent weakness and development of new weakness in prior polio patients. 3. Muscular forces from static optimization
Abstract : At every joint there is a redundant set of muscle activated during movement or loading of the system. Optimization techniques are needed to evaluate individual forces in every muscle. The objective in this thesis was to use static optimization techniques to calculate individual muscle forces in the human extremities. READ MORE

4. Vibration-induced neuropathy in the hand
Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate clinical, pathophysiological and structural aspects of vibration-induced peripheral neuropathy since work with hand-held vibrating tools may lead to progressive neurological and vascular hand symptoms. Symptomatic vibration-exposed men were examined clinically and by neurography, tactilometry, and vibrometry and by measurement of temperature perception thresholds. READ MORE

5. Living with deteriorating and hereditary disease : experiences over ten years of persons with muscular dystrophy and their next of kin
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to elucidate haw persona with muscular dystrophy (MD) and their next of kin experience and describe their daily lives over the last ten years. MD is a group of inherited disorders characterised by muscular weakness caused by muscle wasting. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. READ MORE
