  1. 1. Effects of environmental acoustic factors, individual differences and musical training on speech perception in simulated classrooms

    Author : Douglas MacCutcheon; Robert Ljung; Daniel Västfjäll; Högskolan i Gävle; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; speech in noise; cognition; perception; musical training; spatial listening; virtual classroom environment; bakgrundsljud; kognition; taluppfattning; musikalisk träning; rumsligt lyssnande; virtuella klassrumsmiljöer; Hållbar stadsutveckling; Sustainable Urban Development;

    Abstract : Formal learning takes place primarily through speech perception in classroom environments and is therefore dependent on the listener’s ability to cope with a number of acoustic factors that interfere with the speech signal. As classrooms are inclusive spaces accommodating learners with a broad range of abilities and backgrounds, this research investigated some of the ways in which individual differences in supporting cognitive skills are related to speech perception outcomes in various challenging acoustic environments. 3. 3. Tracking selective attention in a musical cocktail

    Author : Cassia Low Manting; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The cocktail party effect refers to mankind’s ability to focus attention on a single sound within noisy or complex auditory environments, in order to extract the most behaviourally-relevant information present. To investigate this cognitive phenomenon in a precise manner, we used frequency-tagging to separate neural auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs), which are specific to the driving frequency of each auditory source, from a neural mix elicited by multiple simultaneous stimuli. 4. 4. Development and training of higher order cognitive functions and their interrelations

    Author : Sissela Bergman Nutley; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Inhibitory functions (IFs) and working memory (WM) are essential for higher order cognitive functions such as non-verbal reasoning (NVR). WM is the ability to temporarily store and process information. IFs involve resisting automatic, inappropriate responses and limiting the interference of information held in WM. READ MORE
