1. Functional Studies of Genes Associated with Muscle Growth in Pigs and Hair Greying in Horses
Abstract : Domestic animals have become very different from their wild ancestors during domestication and animal breeding. This provides a good model to unravel the molecular mechanisms underlying phenotypic variation. In my thesis I have studied genes affecting two important traits, leanness in pigs and hair greying-associated melanoma in horses. READ MORE

2. Endogenous antioxidants in human skeletal muscle and adaption in energy metabolism : with reference to exercise-training, exercise-related factors and nutrition
Abstract : The antioxidant homeostasis is determined by a wide array of interacting cellular antioxidants, as well as being influenced by the homeostasis in energy metabolism. Changes in antioxidant homeostasis, as a consequences of altered production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). and/or by changes in the resident levels of antioxidants. READ MORE

3. Functional characterization of the biological significance of the ZBED6/ZC3H11A locus in placental mammals
Abstract : The recent advances in molecular and computational biology have made possible the study of complicated transcriptional regulatory networks that control a wide range of biological processes and phenotypic traits. In this thesis, several approaches were combined including next generation sequencing, gene expression profiling, chromatin and RNA immunoprecipitation, bioinformatics and genome editing methods in order to characterize the biological significance of the ZBED6 and ZC3H11A genes. 4. Cellular studies of neuromuscular disorders related to the sarcomeric proteins
Abstract : Sarcomere is the basic unit of cardiac and skeletal muscle contraction and its proper function requires an invariant organization of this structure. Mutations in sarcomeric proteins are known to cause increasing number of different cardiac and skeletal muscle diseases. READ MORE

5. Investigating the function of the Receptor Tyrosine Kinase ALK during Drosophila melanogaster development
Abstract : The Drosophila melanogaster gene Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (DAlk) is homologous to mammalian Alk, which is a member of the Alk/Ltk family of receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs). In humans the t(2;5) translocation involving the Alk locus encodes an active form of Alk that is the causative agent in Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (Morris et al., 1994). READ MORE
