  1. 11. K+ channels and the regulation of synaptic transmission

    Author : Evanthia Nanou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Neuronal excitability is highly regulated by K+ channels that are activated by a voltage change across the plasma membrane or by a rise in intracellular Na+ or Ca2+ concentration. The main focus of this thesis has been to characterize the Na+-activated K+ (KNa) and the Ca2+-activated K+ (KCa) channels and to determine their role in regulating synaptic transmission in the lamprey spinal cord. 2. 12. Elucidating the molecular basis of Na+/H+ exchange

    Author : Pascal F. Meier; David Drew; Simon Newstead; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; membrane protein; secondary-active transporter; Solute Carrier Transporter; ion-exchange; sodium proton exchanger; potassium proton exchanger; protein structure; cryo-EM; regulation; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Solute carrier (SLC) transporters are membrane transport proteins, which catalyse the movement of nutrients, ions, and drugs across cell membranes. Here, I will present our contribution to understanding the mechanism of the sodium/proton exchangers (NHE), belonging to the SLC9 family of membrane transporters. READ MORE

  3. 13. Reactivity of human omental blood vessels. Effects of 5-hydroxytryptamine, substance P and the intravenous anaesthetic propofol

    Author : Susanna Wallerstedt; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; intensivvård; intensive care; Anaesthesiology; endothelium; calcium; human; hyperpolarization; K channels; nitric oxide; omental artery; omental vein; propofol; receptors; Anestesiologi; serotonin; sympathetic nervous system; substance P;

    Abstract : Regulation of blood flow involves several endogenous substances and mechanisms, and exogenous substances may also affect the blood flow. In the present thesis, human omental blood vessels were investigated in vitro concerning (i) characteristics of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) receptors; (ii) mediators of substance P (SP)-induced relaxation; (iii) direct and indirect (via effects on sympathetic neurotransmission) effects of the intravenous anaesthetic propofol. 4. 14. Beating a Random Assignment : Approximating Constraint Satisfaction Problems

    Author : Gustav Hast; Johan Håstad; Uri Zwick; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Datalogi; Computer science; Datalogi;

    Abstract : An instance of a Boolean constraint satisfaction problem, CSP, consists of a set of constraints acting over a set of Boolean variables. The objective is to find an assignment to the variables that satisfies all the constraints. READ MORE

  5. 15. Modeling of bursting mechanisms and coordination in a spinal central pattern generator

    Author : Jeanette Hellgren Kotaleski; KTH; []
    Keywords : adaptation; central pattern generator; computer simulation; inter segmental coordination; lamprey; locomotion; neural network; rhythmogenesis; TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIKVETENSKAP;

    Abstract : Mechanisms underlying lotal bursting as well as coordinationbetween different levels of a spinal CPG generating locomotionhave been investigated using computer simulations. A"primitive" jawless vertebrate, the lamprey, is used a.s aprototype model. READ MORE
