11. Aspects of the inflammatory response and formation of polys in the nasal and sinus mucosa
Abstract : Experimental sinusitis was induced in rabbits by ostial occlusion, with or without subsequent inoculation of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus or Bacteroides fragilis The general inflammatory response, including goblet cell differentiation and polyp formation, was morphologically investigated. 13. Clinical aspects of olfaction
Abstract : The most important aims of this thesis were: (1) to investigate the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in an adult Swedish population and to relate dysfunction to factors of possible impact on olfaction, (2) to present our experience with patients seeking medical attention for olfactory disorders, (3) to describe the relationship between detection and identification tests for olfactory disorders, (4) to assess olfactory event-related potentials (OERPs) in patients with olfactory impairment and in healthy controls, thereby exploring possibilities and limitations regarding to the clinical utility of the method, and (5) to evaluate the effect on the sense of smell of radiation in patients treated for head and neck cancer. 15. Studies on arachidonic acid metabolism in normal and malignant hematopoietic cells
Abstract : This thesis deals with the metabolism of arachidonic acid via the 5-lipoxygenase- and the 15-lipoxygenase-1 pathways in normal and malignant hematopoietic cells. The first part of the thesis (papers I & II) describes the expression of genes involved in arachidonic acid metabolism and the capacity to generate leukotriene (LT) B4 via the 5-lipoxygenase pathway in blood tumor cells from patients with precursor B-ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) and AML (acute myeloid leukemia).
