  1. 1. Explaining everyday problem solving

    Author : Annika Wallin; Kognitionsvetenskap; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; domain-specificity; ecological rationality; evolutionary psychology; practice theory; situated action; universal problem solver; everyday cognition; Explanations; everyday problem solving; domain-generality; causality; social information; Psychology; Psykologi;

    Abstract : How well can we explain natural occurrences of cognitive behaviours given the theoretical frameworks available to us today? The thesis explores what has to be assumed in cognitive theory in order to provide such an explanation, in contrast to being able to predict behaviour under controlled circumstances. The behaviours considered are all of the type described as involving higher level cognition or being representation hungry. READ MORE

  2. 2. Learning to solve problems that you have not learned to solve: Strategies in mathematical problem solving

    Author : Éva Fülöp; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Problem-solving strategies; Problem-solving ability; Variation theory; Design principles; Classroom teaching; Design-based research DBR ;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between problem-solving strategies and success in mathematical problem solving. In its introductory part, it pursues and describes the term strategy in mathematics and discusses its relationship to the method and algorithm concepts. READ MORE

  3. 3. Approaching Mathematical Discourse : Two analytical frameworks and their relation to problem solving interactions

    Author : Andreas Ryve; Kimmo Eriksson; Inger Wistedt; Anna Sfard; Mälardalens högskola; []

    Abstract : The driving force of conducting the two studies presented in this thesis is to examine ways that conceptual understanding and problem solving could be part of mathematics teaching, and through that, part of students' mathematical knowledge. The specific aims of the thesis are: 1) to characterize the classroom discourse of two, apparently similar, problem solving courses in teacher education and 2) to discuss the possibilities of developing two analytical approaches - the communicational approach to cognition and the dialogical approach - used for studying mathematical discourse. 4. 4. Exploring processes and resources for problem solving at the crossroads between chemistry and mathematics

    Author : Sofie Ye; Felix M. Ho; Maja Elmgren; Jonas Bergman Ärlebäck; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Problem solving at the crossroads between chemistry and mathematics presents significant challenges for students at all levels of education. This licentiate thesis aims to enhance our understanding of such problem solving, with a focus on how university students approach problems in the context of chemical kinetics. READ MORE
