    Abstract : Mining has been and still is an important industry in Sweden, it has strongly contributed to the standard of living we have today. Extraction of ore began in the 12th century, but did not come about frequently until the 16th century, which is often seen as the starting age for ore processing and metal extraction. READ MORE

  2. 22. Timing and Origin of Igneous Rocks in the Gällivare area, Northern Sweden

    Author : Zimer Sarlus; Christina Wanhainen; Sabina Strmic Palinkas; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ore Geology; Malmgeologi;

    Abstract : The Gällivare area is one of Europe’s top mining regions. The area is located in the northern Norrbotten ore district which hosts ore deposits such as the Malmberget underground iron ore mine, the Aitik open pit Cu-Au mine and the currently explored Nautanen Cu-Au deposit. In addition, several small, mineralized bodies are found. READ MORE

  3. 23. Bacteria and geochemistry in a former uranium open pit mine - mobilization of trace metals

    Author : Frida Edberg; Sara J. M. Holmström; Hans Borg; Stephan M. Kraemer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Pseudomonas fluorescens; siderophore; Ranstad; alum shale; iron; pyrosequencing; redox; size fractionation; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : In mining areas around the world, chemical and biotic processes have lead to the release of toxic substances, e.g. metals. Microbial processes influence metal speciation, while the chemical environment shapes and controls microbial populations. READ MORE

  4. 24. Process water geochemistry and interactions with magnetite at the Kiirunavaara iron mine, northern Sweden

    Author : Magnus Westerstrand; Lars Lövgren; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Applied Geology; Tillämpad geologi;

    Abstract : Current global estimates indicate that ca. 2400 million tonnes of iron is produced annually, most of which is used to make steel. Due to the associated costs, environmental challenges and energy consumption, steel is one of the world’s most intensively recycled materials. For example, about 98 % of structural steel is recycled in the USA. READ MORE

  5. 25. Structural evolution of two ore-bearing Palaeoproterozoic metasupracrustal belts in the Kiruna area, Northwestern Fennoscandian Shield

    Author : Joel Andersson; Tobias Bauer; Olof Martinsson; Luth Stefan; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In this project, two key study areas in the northwestern Fennoscandian Shield are under investigation. The “Western supracrustal belt” and “Central Kiruna area” are both located along lithotectonically comparable Rhyacian-Orosirian metasupracrustal belts and both areas are characterized by iron oxide-apatite (IOA) and iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-style mineralizations and related hydrothermal alterations.
