  1. 1. Biologically Interesting Compounds from Natural Sources

    Author : Veronica de la Parra; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cytotoxicity; Natural products; terpenoids; vasorelaxant activity; allylmercaptane; diabetes mellitus type II; Organisk kemi; Organic chemistry; Cacalia decomposita; GPR40 receptor; TRP channel;

    Abstract : Natural products have traditionally played a major role in the drug discovery process. Besides constituting extremely popular drugs in the market, and an ever-increasing source of interesting and novel chemical structures, they have also aided the characterization of many a pharmacological target. 2. 2. Transition-Metal Catalyzed Synthesis of Small- and Medium-Sized Rings Applications toward oxazole synthesis, cycloheptadienes, and natural products

    Author : Henrik von Wachenfeldt; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; catalysis; transition metal; cyclization; cycloaddition; natural product;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the development of novel methodologies for the synthesis of hetero- and carbocycles enabled by transition metal catalysis. The second chapter of the thesis describes a gold-catalyzed three-component reaction to form a variety of substituted oxazoles from readily available N-benzylimines, terminal alkynes, and acyl chlorides. 3. 3. Health Effects of Foods Enriched with Cereal beta-Glucans from Cereals

    Author : Maria Biörklund; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Näringslära; Nutrition; glucose; cholesterol; oats; barley;

    Abstract : Since soluble fibre in the form of the cereal beta-glucans found in oats and barley has been shown to have a positive effect on lipid and glucose metabolism, people at risk of developing cardiovascular diseases or diabetes might benefit from that a variety of palatable food products containing beta-glucans being available to them. The aim of the papers presented in the thesis was to evaluate the metabolic effects on persons with hypercholesterolemia or type 2 diabetes of various new food prototypes supplemented by beta-glucans. 4. 4. Structural Studies of Echinococcus granulosus Fatty-acid-binding Protein 1 and Human Semicarbazide-sensitive Amine Oxidase

    Author : Emma Jakobsson; Gerard Kleywegt; Andrea Mattevi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase; vascular adhesion protein-1; copper-containing amine oxidase; fatty-acid-binding protein; Echinococcus granulosus; crystal structure; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The parasite Echinococcus granulosus causes hydatid disease, a major zoonosis. A fatty-acid-binding protein, EgFABP1, is important for the parasite, as it must acquire almost all its lipids from its environment or the host. The structure of EgFABP1 has been solved and refined to 1.6 Å resolution. READ MORE

  5. 5. Directing Angiogenesis : Cellular Responses to Gradients in vitro

    Author : Irmeli Barkefors; Johan Kreuger; Lena Kjellén; Pär Gerwins; Ferdinand Le Noble; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Angiogenesis; Endothelial cell; Cell migration; Chemotaxis; Gradients; Microfluidics; VEGFA; VEGFR2; Exocyst; Exocytosis; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi;

    Abstract : Blood vessels are essential for the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to tissues, as well as for the removal of waste products. Patients with tumors, wounds or diabetes all have active angiogenesis, formation and remodeling of blood vessels, a process that is initiated and manipulated by gradients of secreted signaling proteins.
