  1. 6. Island biogeography of young land uplift islands - viewed through the lens of bryophytes in a northern Swedish archipelago

    Author : Andreas Karlsson Tiselius; Mats Dynesius; Roland Jansson; Göran Englund; Joakim Hjältén; Tord Snäll; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; functional data analysis; metacommunity; isolation; mosses; liverworts; sporophyte production; dispersal-establishment trade-off; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany; Conservation Biology; naturvårdsbiologi; Statistics; statistik;

    Abstract : Increasing habitat fragmentation and rapid global warming is changing the conditions for species populations and ecological communities around the world. This presents challenges for the maintenance of biodiversity and a dominant paradigm for conservation in fragmented habitats is given by island biogeography and metapopulation (or metacommunity) ecology. 2. 7. Hybridisation between introduced brown hares and native mountain hares in Sweden

    Author : Carl-Gustaf Thulin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; naturvårdsbiologi; Conservation Biology;

    Abstract : To investigate the extent and effect of hybridisation between wild sympatric populations of introduced brown hares (Lepus europaeus) and native mountain hares (L.timidus) in Sweden, the geographic distribution of genetic variation in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and nuclear DNA microsatellite markers were analysed within and between the two species and their presumed hybrids. 3. 8. Postglacial Population History of the Common Shrew (Sorex araneus) in Fennoscandia : Molekylära studier av återkolonisation, könsbundet genflöde och kromosomrasbildning

    Author : Anna-Carin Andersson; Håkan Tegelström; Cecilia Alström-Rapaport; Jeremy B Searle; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Molecular genetics; Sorex araneus; chromosome race; postglacial recolonisation; hybrid zone; sex-biased gene flow; chromosomal evolution; Genetik; Genetics; Genetik;

    Abstract : The common shrew, Sorex araneus, has one of the most variable karyotypes among mammals, displaying numerous chromosomes races throughout its distribution, which can be categorized into different karyotypic groups. The objective of this thesis was to examine the postglacial population history of Fennoscandian common shrews using autosomal microsatellites, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and a Y chromosome specific microsatellite (L8Y). 4. 9. Cooperative Breeding in the Southern Anteater-Chat : Sexual Disparity, Survival and Dispersal

    Author : Jonathan Barnaby; Jan Ekman; Anssi Laurila; Rita Covas; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Southern anteater-chat; Myrmecocichla formicivora; cooperative breeding; social evolution; behavioural ecology; delayed dispersal; family living; Africa; Biologi med inriktning mot populationsbiologi; Biology with specialization in Population Biology;

    Abstract : Group-living sets the scene for complex social behaviours such as cooperative breeding, and exploring the factors that shape group-living is crucial in understanding these behaviours. This thesis explores the ecology of a population of the facultative cooperative breeding southern anteater-chat (Myrmecocichla formicivora), a group-living bird species endemic to southern Africa. 5. 10. Genetic variation and local adaptation in peripheral populations of toads

    Author : Björn Rogell; Jacob Höglund; Anssi Laurila; Josh Van Bushkirk; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestrisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; Populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : Northern fringe populations generally have low amounts of genetic variation and inhabit habitats where specific adaptations are needed. On the Swedish west coast, the natterjack toad (Bufo calamita) inhabits skerry islands. READ MORE
