  1. 1. Spectral Properties of Type Ia Supernovae and Implications for Cosmology

    Author : Jakob Nordin; Ariel Goobar; Mark Phillips; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; cosmology; spectroscopy; supernovae; Physics; Fysik; Cosmology; Kosmologi; Extragalactical astronomy; Extragalaktisk astronomi; fysik; Physics;

    Abstract : Type Ia supernovae can, for a short period of time, reach the same brightness as an entire galaxy. They are responsible for the creation of a large fraction of all heavy elements and can be used, as standard candles, to prove that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Yet, we do not fully understand them. READ MORE

  2. 2. Searches for Particle Dark Matter : Dark stars, dark galaxies, dark halos and global supersymmetric fits

    Author : Pat Scott; Joakim Edsjö; Lars Bergström; Jan Conrad; Dan Hooper; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dark matter; supersymmetry; gamma rays; dwarf galaxies; stellar evolution; cosmological perturbations; phase transitions; statistical techniques; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; Astroparticle physics; Astropartikelfysik; Cosmology; Kosmologi; Elementary particle physics; Elementarpartikelfysik; Computational physics; Beräkningsfysik; Formation and development of stars; Stjärnors bildning och utveckling; High energy astrophysics; Högenergiastrofysik; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : The identity of dark matter is one of the key outstanding problems in both particle and astrophysics. In this thesis, I describe a number of complementary searches for particle dark matter. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects of the Duality between Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory and String Theory

    Author : Daniel Bundzik; Teoretisk partikelfysik - Geonomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; classical mechanics; quantum mechanics; relativity; gravitation; statistical physics; thermodynamics; Natural science; Naturvetenskap; Physics; Fysik; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; Star product; Leigh-Strassler deformation; R-matrix; Integrability; Spin-chains; Fractional D-branes; type IIB string theory; AdS CFT-correspondence; gauge gravity correspondence; kvantmekanik; klassisk mekanik; termodynamik; statistisk fysik; relativitet;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with three topics related to the Ads/CFT correspondence. In Paper I, solutions describing the geometry of fractional D1-branes of Type IIB string theory are presented. The running coupling constant is computed on the gauge theory side. READ MORE

  4. 4. Arithmetic and Hyperbolic Structures in String Theory

    Author : Daniel Persson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Instantons; Kac-Moody algebras; Spacelike singularities; String Theory;

    Abstract : This thesis consists of an introductory text followed by two separate parts which may be read independently of each other. In Part I we analyze certain hyperbolic structures arising when studying gravity in the vicinity of spacelike singularities (the BKL-limit). READ MORE

  5. 5. Magnetic fields around massive protostars as traced by masers and dust emission

    Author : Daria Dall` Olio; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magnetic field – stars: formation – stars: massive – masers – dust – polarization – stars: individual: IRAS 18089-1732 – G9.62 0.19;

    Abstract : It is not fully clear how the magnetic field acts during the first stages of star formation. A possible way to clarify its role is to observe the polarized light coming from masers and thermal dust emission. READ MORE
