  1. 21. Dieback of Fraxinus excelsior : biology of ash dieback and genetic variation of the fungus Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus

    Author : Stina Bengtsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Ash dieback caused by Hymenoscyphus pseudoalbidus (anamorph Chalara fraxinea) is a disease that has emerged during the past twenty years. It was first observed in Poland and has expanded over most of the distribution area of European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) in Europe. This thesis comprises four scientific papers. READ MORE

    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; Adrenocortical cancer; Positron Emission Tomography; Metomidate; Combination chemotherapy; Streptozocin; op -DDD; OPEC; Disease-free Interval; Survival; Responses; Side effects; Receptor protein-tyrosine kinases; c-Kit; Phospho-c-Kit; PDGFRβ; Mutation; Imatinib; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Abstract : Adrenocortical cancer (ACC) is a rare disease that is often difficult to diagnose, and therefore often presents at an advanced stage. Various cytotoxic treatments have been tried with little success. Evaluation of new diagnostic methods and improvement of medical therapies are therefore crucial. READ MORE

  3. 23. IGF, PI3K and HIF-2 in Normal and Tumor Development

    Author : Sofie Mohlin; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neuroblastoma; Hypoxia; Insulin-like Growth Factor; PI3K; HIF-2alpha; Cancer; Development;

    Abstract : Cells adapt to oxygen shortage, hypoxia, by inducing a transcriptional shift governed mainly by Hypoxia Inducible Factor (HIF)-1 and HIF-2. In various cancer forms, including neuroblastoma, high expression of HIF-2α correlates with disseminated disease and poor outcome. READ MORE

  4. 24. Clinical and Experimental Studies in Primary Sjögren’s Syndrome and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

    Abstract : Autoimmune mechanisms and genetic susceptibility contribute to the pathogenesis of primary Sjögren’s syndrome and SLE. These chronic systemic autoimmune diseases have many serological and clinical features in common and have an impact on daily life. READ MORE

  5. 25. Cytotoxic Cyclotides : Structure, Activity, and Mode of Action

    Author : Erika Svangård; Per Claeson; Lars Bohlin; Ulf Göransson; John H. Cardellina II; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacognosy; cyclotide; cytotoxic; cancer; cyclic cystine knot; Viola; Violaceae; liposome; hollow fibre; homology modelling; mass spectrometry; amphipathic; structure–activity; tumour; membrane disruption; necrosis; Farmakognosi; Pharmacognosy; Farmakognosi;

    Abstract : Cyclotides are small cyclic plant proteins, and this thesis addresses their cytotoxic structure-activity properties and their mode of action on human cancer cell lines. Cyclotides were isolated from Viola odorata and Viola tricolor; three novel cyclotide sequences and two known sequences, but of new origin, were identified using mass spectrometry, amino acid analysis, and Edman degradation.
