  1. 1. Studies of the pathogenesis of hemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

    University dissertation from Department of Pediatrics, Lund University

    Author : Diana Karpman; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [1997]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatri; Pediatrics; tumor necrosis factor; interleukin 6; von Willebrand factor; apoptosis; lipopolysaccharide; shiga-like toxin; Escherichia coli O157:H7; Hemolytic uremic syndrome; thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : This study investigated the pathogenesis of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). (1) The relative roles of lipopolysaccharide and Shiga-like toxin-2 were studied in a mouse model of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection. READ MORE

  2. 2. Mechanisms of Shiga toxin-mediated signaling and toxicity

    University dissertation from Lund University, Faculty of Medicine

    Author : Karl Johansson; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2020]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; EHEC; Shiga toxin; Microvesicles; Purinergic Receptors;

    Abstract : AbstractShiga toxin (Stx) is the main virulence factor of enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC). EHEC strains cause gastrointestinal infection and release Stx that can gain access to the circulation. Patients may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome with extensive kidney damage. READ MORE

  4. 4. Prognostic factors in prostate cancer with special reference to the effect of hormonal therapy

    University dissertation from Department of Urology, Malmö University Hospital, 205 02 Malmö, Sweden

    Author : Göran Ahlgren; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [1999]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Urology; neuroendocrine differentiation; tumour cell proliferation; DNA-ploidy; prostate cancer; prognostic factors; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : We have used image cell analysis to analyse nuclear DNA content on fine needle aspiration biopsies from 96 patients diagnosed to have prostate cancer 1980-81. By stratifying diploid and tetraploid tumours according to a cytometric proliferation index (PI), we suggest a new DNA-classification that is prognostic of death from prostate cancer in multivariate analysis including conventional prognostic factors. 5. 5. Diagnostic and prognostic value of proteinuria in chronic renal diseases

    University dissertation from Omran Bakoush, Griffelvägen 46, 245 64, Hjärup

    Author : Omran Bakoush; Lund University.; Lunds universitet.; [2004]
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Urology; Hypertension.; Glomerulonephritis; IgM; Albuminuria; Diabetic Nephropathy; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : To the extent that increased urinary protein excretion is an indicator of alterations of the glomerular capillary wall (GCW) and appearance of tubulointerstitial damage, proteinuria can be a good marker of the overall severity of the glomerular and tubulointerstitial damage, and therefore, the prognosis of glomerular diseases. Studies I, II, and III show that it is the type of proteinuria, rather than the degree of albuminuria, that predicts the progression in renal, proteinuric diseases. READ MORE
