21. Inducible nitric oxide synthase in experimental urinary tract infection
Abstract : Urinary tract infection (UTI) is among the most common bacterial infections in humans and the majority are caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli). Abundant evidence indicates that nitric oxide (NO) produced by the inducible NO synthase (iNOS) plays an important role in host defense against infection. READ MORE

22. Mechanisms of transendothelial and tissue transport in the peritoneum. Experimental studies on rat
Abstract : In the present thesis, the quantitative role of active transport (transcytosis) in bulk transvascular protein movement in vivo was evaluated. Using chemical transcytosis inhibition (N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) and filipin), we were able to show that NEM actually increases endothelial permeability to macromolecules, probably as a result of unspecific toxic action on endothelial cells. 23. Development of Feedback Microwave Thermotherapy in Symptomatic Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia
Abstract : Abstract: The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate ProstaLund Feedback Treatment® (PLFT®) and the CoreTherm® device with regard to biophysics, mechanisms of action, treatment indications, additional techniques, efficacy and safety in the treatment of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The application of two biophysical equations in the PLFT software is explained. READ MORE

24. Diagnostic and prognostic aspects of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies in systemic vasculitis
Abstract : Primary systemic vasculitis is associated with a high mortality if left untreated and it is essential to make the diagnosis before permanent organ damage has occurred. In this thesis the diagnostic and prognostic significance of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCA) in systemic vasculitis is investigated. READ MORE

25. Mucosal receptors involved in pathogen recognition and host defence
Abstract : Urinary tract infection is the most common infection in man. P fimbriae are virulence factors of uro-pathogenic Escherichia coli. They are expressed by 70-90 % of acute pyelonephritis isolates and up to 100% of the most virulent isolates that cause bacteremia. READ MORE
