  1. 1. Caspase-dependent and caspase-independent neuronal injury in the developing brain

    Author : Changlian Zhu; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : hypoxia ischemia; neonatal; cell death; caspase; apoptosis-inducing factor; brain; apoptosis; autophagy; nitric oxide;

    Abstract : Aims: To investigate the mechanisms of neuronal cell death after hypoxia-ischemia in the developing brain.Methods: Rats or mice were subjected to left common carotid artery ligation plus hypoxia. Animals were sacrificed at certain time points after hypoxia-ischemia. READ MORE

  2. 2. Tolerance and injury mechanisms in the developing CNS

    Author : Malin Gustavsson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; brain; PARP-1; tolerance; global gene expression; apoptosis; cerebral blood flow;

    Abstract : The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying the development of hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury has been the subject of extensive research yet a neuroprotective strategy to limit its progression is lacking.OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present thesis was to obtain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in neonatal HI, specifically to study I) the involvement of Poly ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP)-1 in HI, II) the effect of hypoxic PC on brain injury and function after HI in the long-term perspective, III) the effect of hypoxic PC on global gene expression, in particular the involvement of apoptosis related genes, and IV) the vascular response to hypoxic PC. 3. 3. Apoptosis-related mechanisms in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Author : Xiaoyang Wang; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; caspase; ERK; XIAP; EPO; asialoEPO; brain;

    Abstract : Aims: To characterize the activation of caspases-3 and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) in the neonatal brain after hypoxia-ischemia (HI) injury and evaluate the neuroprotective effect of X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis (XIAP) protein, erythropoietin (EPO) and the non-erythropoietic derivative asialoEPO. Methods: Seven-day-old rats or 9-day-old mice were subjected to HI. READ MORE

  4. 4. Aspects of pathological apoptosis in the immature brain after hypoxia-ischemia

    Author : Ulrika Hallin; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : neonatal; rat; brain; hypoxia-ischemia; necrosis; apoptosis; calpain; caspase; Bcl-2; Bax; mitochondria; calcineurin.;

    Abstract : The cause of mechanisms underlying perinatal brain injury is not fully known, but it results in a wide variety of neurological impairments in the affected children. When injured, neurons of the newborn brain are prone to undergo programmed cell death, apoptosis, since this genetic program is normally activated in some cells during development of the nervous system, even in the perinatal period. 5. 5. Protection of the developing brain with trophic factors. Signaling through serine/threonine kinase pathways

    Author : Katarina Gustafson Brywe; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : hypoxia-ischemia; neonatal; brain; growth factors; ser thr kinases;

    Abstract : Background: Perinatal asphyxia still constitutes a clinical hazard associated withconsiderable neurologic morbidity. There is today no therapy in clinical use toprotect the brain after such insult. READ MORE
