  1. 1. Mechanisms of Tissue Vascularization

    Author : Witold Kilarski; Pär Gerwins; Lena Claesson-Welsh; Andreas Bikfalvi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pathology; vascularization; angiogenesis; granulation tissue; myofibroblast; wound healing; Patologi; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Tissue neovascularization in postnatal life occurs during post-traumatic tissue healing, neoplastic growth and in the endometrium during the reproductive cycle of females. Although embryonic angiogenesis has been intensively studied, far less is known about tissue revascularization and vessel remodeling in adults due to methodological difficulties. READ MORE

  2. 2. Photon migration in tissue : laser induced fluorescence for cancer diagnostics and influence of optical properties on microvascular Doppler spectroscopy

    Author : Henrik Nilsson; Othar Svaasand Svansand; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Laser induced flourescence (LIF) is an "optical biopsy" method, based on the selective accumulation of fluorophores in neoplastic tissue. Two recently developed, non-photosensitizing tumor seeking carotenoporphyrins were assessed regarding tumor selectivity, and biodistribution, in experimental animals. READ MORE

  3. 3. Regulation of ongoing DNA synthesis in normal and neoplastic brain tissue

    Author : Juan Sebastián Yakisich; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : DNA replication - Cell cycle - Brain - Gliomas - Tissue mini-unit - Protein kinases - Proteases Inhibitors - Roscovitine;

    Abstract : The treatment of human brain tumour is challenging in part due to the blood brain barrier and in part due to the specific biology of brain tumours that confer resistance to chemotherapy. For instance, the 5 years survival rate for patients carrying intracranial glioblastoma multiforme has remained at 4-5 % for the last 30 years. READ MORE

  4. 4. p53 and neoplastic progression in Barrett's esophagus

    Author : Stig Ramel; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Barrett s esophagus; neoplastic progression; flow cytometry; p53 gene; p53protein; 17p allelic loss; p53 mutations; S phase fractions; aneuploidy; SV 40 large T antigen; elastase-SV 40 T antigen transgenic mice.;

    Abstract : Barrett's esophagus is a condition in which the normal squamous epithelium is replaced by columnar epithelium as a response to acid reflux. It develops as a complication in 10-20% of patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. READ MORE

  5. 5. Expression of Neuroendocrine Markers in Normal and Neoplastic Tissue with an Emphasis on Ghrelin and Obestatin

    Author : Malin Grönberg; Eva Tiensuu Janson; Apostolos Tsolakis; Jan Saras; Mauro Papotti; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : ghrelin; obestatin; neuroendocrine marker; immunohistochemistry; neuroendocrine tumors; breast cancer; mammary glands; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Endokrinologi och Diabetologi; Endocrinology and Diabetology;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to characterize the expression of the peptides ghrelin and obestatin, as well as other neuroendocrine markers in human normal tissues, in invasive breast cancer and a wide panel of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). In normal tissues the expression of ghrelin and obestatin was mainly localized to the gastric mucosa, and in lesser extent in the remaining gastrointestinal tract, endocrine pancreas and mammary glands.
