  1. 16. The use of adipose derived stem cells in spinal cord and peripheral nerve repair

    Author : Mallappa K Kolar; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; adipose derived stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Abstract : Clinically, injuries affecting the spinal cord or peripheral nerves can leave those affected with severe disability and, at present, there are limited options for treatment. Peripheral nerve injury with a significant gap between the proximal and distal stumps is currently treated with autologous nerve grafting but this is limited by availability of donor nerve and has associated morbidities. 2. 17. The Chorda Tympani Nerve : Role in Taste Impairment in Middle Ear Disease and after Ear Surgery

    Author : Katarina Berling Holm; Magnus von Unge; Mikael Karlberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Chorda tympani nerve; ear surgery; taste; chronic suppurative otitis media; otosclerosis; electrogustometry; filter paper disc method; quality of life; transmission electron microscopy; degeneration; sprouting; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : The chorda tympani nerve, also known as the taste nerve, runs uncovered through the middle ear cavity, a localization that exposes the nerve to pathological processes and surgical trauma in the middle ear. People operated on for otosclerosis tend to complain more about postoperative taste disturbances than those operated on for chronic otitis media. READ MORE

  3. 18. Strategies in Cochlear Nerve Regeneration, Guidance and Protection : Prospects for Future Cochlear Implants

    Author : Fredrik Edin; Helge Rask-Andersen; Peetra Magnusson; Maoli Duan; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Human vestibular nerve; Scarpa s ganglion; Stem cells; Nanoparticles; Nanocrystalline diamond; Oto-Rhino-Laryngology; Oto-rhino-laryngologi; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Today, it is possible to restore hearing in congenitally deaf children and severely hearing-impaired adults through cochlear implants (CIs). A CI consists of an external sound processor that provides acoustically induced signals to an internal receiver. READ MORE

  4. 19. Tendon autografts for bridging nerve defects

    Author : Jerker Brandt; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatology; Surgery; orthopaedics; cell culture; graft; rat; collagen; tendon; Schwann cells; axons; Peripheral nerve regeneration; axonal outgrowth; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatologi;

    Abstract : A new method, where a tendon segment – a tendon autograft – was used as graft material for peripheral nerve reconstruction, was developed. Defects, 10-15 mm long, in rat sciatic nerves were bridged by various modifications of tendons. READ MORE

  5. 20. Neuroprotection and axonal regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Dag Welin; Lev N. Novikov; Lars B. Dahlin; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Dorsal root ganglion; Motoneuron; Axonal reaction; Peripheral nerve injury; Nerve regeneration; N-acetylcysteine; Hand surgery; Handkirurgi; Anatomy; Anatomi; anatomi; Human Anatomy; handkirurgi; hand surgery;

    Abstract : Following microsurgical reconstruction of injured peripheral nerves, severed axons are able to undergo spontaneous regeneration. However, the functional result is always unsatisfactory with poor sensory recovery and reduced motor function. READ MORE
