  1. 6. Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

    Author : Mariann Sondell; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Schwann cell; SCG; rat; peripheral nerve regeneration; neuropilin-1; nerve repair; mouse; growth factor; flk-1; axonal outgrowth; DRG; VEGF; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis concerns vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and its possible role as a neurotrophic factor. I have investigated the effect of VEGF on neurons in culture but also in vivo, following a crush lesion of the sciatic nerve, and following nerve repair. READ MORE

  2. 7. Phospholipase A2 in nerve injury and axonal outgrowth

    Author : Marie Hornfelt; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neurology; cell death; apoptosis; leukotrienes; arachidonic acid; M-type receptor; secretory phospholipase A2; cytosolic phospholipase A2; sciatic nerve; dorsal root ganglia; growth cone; axonal outgrowth; nerve injury; peripheral nerve regeneration; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with processes coupled to injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS), with a general aim to investigate the role of phospholipase A2 (PLA2) enzymes in axonal outgrowth. The axonal outgrowth of dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons in vitro was reduced by several different inhibitors of PLA2 activity and enhanced by an activator of this enzyme. READ MORE

  3. 8. JNK/c-Jun Signaling and Peripheral Nerve Regeneration

    Author : Charlotta Lindwall; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; Djurfysiologi; Animal physiology; JNK; signal transduction; nerve regeneration;

    Abstract : The events associated with axonal injury in the peripheral nervous system (PNS) have been described in detail. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regenerative response, or neuronal cell death, following axonal injury are poorly understood. READ MORE

  4. 9. Sensory neuronal protection & improving regeneration after peripheral nerve injury

    Author : Andrew McKay Hart; Mikael Wiberg; Angus McGrouther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; cell death; TUNEL; optical disection; dorsal root ganglion; peripheral nerve; nerve conduit; Schwann cell; glial growth factor; leukaemia inhibitory factor; acetyl-L-carnitine; N-acetyl-cysteine; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery;

    Abstract : Peripheral nerve trauma is a common cause of considerable functional morbidity, and healthcare expenditure. Particularly in the ~15% of injuries unsuitable for primary repair, standard clinical management results in inadequate sensory restitution in the majority of cases, despite the rigorous application of complex microsurgical techniques. 5. 10. Repair and Reconstruction of Peripheral Nerve Injuries. Treatment with G-CSF and Stromal Vascular Fraction

    Author : Hanna Frost; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; peripheral nerve injuries; nerve regeneration; reconstructive surgical procedures; diabetes mellitus; rat sciatic nerve; granulocyte colony-stimulating factor; stromal vascular fraction; electrospinning; rats; Schwann cells;

    Abstract : While surgery is a cornerstone in treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, it is not a comprehensive approach, and outcome is unsatisfactory, especially sensory function. The present aim was to translate recent findings about stem- and progenitor cells to improve regenerative outcome, where the cells have to be autologous, available within the same surgical procedure, and minimally manipulated.
