  1. 1. Development of biosynthetic conduits for peripheral nerve repair

    Author : Aleksandra McGrath; Liudmila N Novikova; John Haycock; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biosynthetic conduit; Mesenchymal stem cells; Nerve graft; Nerve tissue engineering; Peripheral nerve injury; Schwann cells;

    Abstract : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with significant loss of nervous tissue leading to poor restoration of function following repair of injured nerves. Although the injury gap could be bridged by autologous nerve graft, the limited access to donor material and additional morbidity such as loss of sensation and scarring have prompted a search for biosynthetic nerve transplants. 2. 2. Studies on Peripheral Nerve Regeneration: Microdispensing, Neurite Guidance and Galectins

    Author : Per Gustavsson; Funktionell zoologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; vävnadskultur; histokemi; cytokemi; Histologi; tissue culture; histochemistry; cytochemistry; Histology; Schwann cells; sciatic nerve; dorsal root ganglia; DRG; neurite guidance; galectins; inkjet; microdispensing; peripheral nervous system; nerve regeneration; Animal physiology; Djurfysiologi; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : The present thesis describes development of a microdispenser-based technique to create of protein patterns for neurite guidance. The same technique was also developed to allow direct positioning of dissociated cells, including neurons, on cell culture substrates. Finally the role of galectin-3 and 8 during nerve regeneration was investigated. READ MORE

  3. 3. Cell therapy for denervated tissue

    Author : Roine El-Habta; Ludvig J. Backman; Paul J. Kingham; Patrik Danielson; António Salgado; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose tissue-derived stem cell; cell therapy; denervation; differentiation; myoblast; peripheral nerve injury; proliferation; regeneration; skeletal muscle; stromal vascular fraction; survival; tendon; cellforskning; cell research; Medical Cell Biology; medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Peripheral nerve injury results in denervation of tendons and muscles. The biology of denervated muscle has been well studied but little is known about the associated tendons. READ MORE

  4. 4. Repair and Reconstruction of Peripheral Nerve Injuries. Treatment with G-CSF and Stromal Vascular Fraction

    Author : Hanna Frost; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; peripheral nerve injuries; nerve regeneration; reconstructive surgical procedures; diabetes mellitus; rat sciatic nerve; granulocyte colony-stimulating factor; stromal vascular fraction; electrospinning; rats; Schwann cells;

    Abstract : While surgery is a cornerstone in treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, it is not a comprehensive approach, and outcome is unsatisfactory, especially sensory function. The present aim was to translate recent findings about stem- and progenitor cells to improve regenerative outcome, where the cells have to be autologous, available within the same surgical procedure, and minimally manipulated. 5. 5. Nerve gap repair by the use of artificial conduits and cultured cells

    Author : Daniel Kalbermatten; Mikael Wiberg; Ulrich Mennen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; adipose stem cells; cell matrix; fibrin; nerve conduit; nerve gap; Surgery; Kirurgi; kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : Peripheral nerve injuries are often associated with loss of nerve tissue and require autologous nerve grafts to provide a physical substrate for axonal growth. This thesis investigates the use of fibrin as both a tubular conduit to guide nerve regeneration and also as a matrix material to suspend various regenerative cell types within/on poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) nerve conduits.
