  1. 1. Predation and shorebirds: predation management, habitat effects and public opinions

    Author : Daniel Isaksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Conservation; waders; predation; coastal pastures; redshank; lapwing; attitudes; human dimensions;

    Abstract : Many shorebird populations are rapidly declining and a high nest predation rate is one of the threats facing these populations. Thus, factors that affect predation and how to manage it in an effective way are receiving increased attention. READ MORE

  2. 2. Behaviour and life-history responses to chick provisioning under risk of nest predation

    Author : Sönke Eggers; David Winkler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; Chick provisioning; clutch size; delayed dispersal; nest concealment; nest predation; parental care; population decline; Perisoreus infaustus; Siberian jay; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : This thesis examines risk management in breeding Siberian jays (Perisoreus infaustus), which is indigenous to the northern taiga. Parent behaviour and the nest are cryptic. A new nest is built each year. It is placed on spruce or pine branches close to the trunk and well insulated with lichens, feathers and reindeer hair. READ MORE

  3. 3. Habitat selection, nest predation and conservation biology in a Black-tailed Godwit (Limosa limosa) population

    Author : Tomas Johansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Black-tailed godwit; Limosa limosa; nest site selection; nest predation; philopatry; risk analysis; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on a black-tailed godwit (Limosa limosa) population, consisting of 35-40 pairs, that breeds on a grazed shore meadow on SE Gotland, Sweden. The small size of the population makes it more prone to extinction due to chance events, than a larger population.The godwits showed microhabitat preferences when choosing nest sites. READ MORE

  4. 4. Biodiversity and green infrastructure in urban landscapes

    Author : Ulf G. Sandström; Per Angelstam; Abdul Khakee; Kjell Nilsson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biologi; Birds in cities; Communication between sciences; Conservation planning; Landscape ecology; Swedish green planning; Urban green space; Urban planning; Urban vegetation; Biologi med ekologisk inriktning; Biology; Biologi; Biologi med ekologisk inriktning;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I evaluate the extent to which biodiversity is affected, and taken into consideration by, urban planning. Based on landscape ecology, I apply an interdisciplinary approach. READ MORE

  5. 5. Population ecology and management of waders breeding on coastal meadows

    Author : Richard Ottvall; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Animal ecology; Djurekologi; grazing management; population modelling; demography; genetic structure; population decline; Tringa totanus;

    Abstract : Many wader (Charadrii) populations are declining throughout in Europe, but the underlying causes are often poorly known and diverse. To fully grasp the reasons behind declines in vulnerable wader populations, it is crucial to understand the demography. READ MORE
