  1. 1. Auditory organotypic cultures and progenitor cell implantation

    Author : Andreas Kaiser; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : According to the WHO, about 5 % of the world’s population suffers from disabling hearing loss. In people above the age of 65 the number is more than 30 %. Common effects of this condition are poor speech discrimination and impaired communication abilities. Patient surveys show that hearing loss often leads to a diminished quality of life. READ MORE

  2. 2. Monoamine transporters in female human reproduction

    Author : Barbara Bottalico; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PMAT; VMAT2; OCT; NET; in-situ hybridization histochemistry; decidualization; human endometrium; placenta; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Monoamine transporters; preeclampsia; histamine; Medicin människa och djur ;

    Abstract : The present study explored the gene and protein expression of the monoamine transporters in human endometrium throughout the menstrual cycle, in early decidua and in placentas from normal as well as preeclamptic pregnancies using in-situ hybridization, real time-PCR, immunohistochemistry and primary tissue cultures. Four distinguishable patterns were observed in the endometrium over the menstrual cycle: (1) epithelial expression of norepinephrine transporter (NET) mRNA, (2) Stromal co- expression of vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) and plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT) mRNAs with maximal intensity in the proliferative phase; (3) increasing epithelial expression of VMAT2 mRNA with a maximum in the late secretory phase; (4) stromal expression of extra-neuronal monoamine transporter (EMT) mRNA with a peak in the early secretory phase. 3. 3. Bridging the distance : children’s strategies on the internet

    Author : Elza Dunkels; Gun-Marie Frånberg; Lisbeth Lundahl; Ola Erstad; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Internet; net cultures; children; digital native; online threats; counter-strategies; online interviews; online ethics; Pedgogical work; Pedagogiskt arbete;

    Abstract : This thesis deals with the following questions: What do children find negative on the Internet? What counter strategies do they use? How have they developed these strategies? The method used is one-to-one online interviews and the analyses are qualitative in nature. The sample is children in grade 6 of the Swedish compulsory school, aged between 11 and 13. READ MORE

  4. 4. Modulation of AMPA glutamate receptor functions in primary neuronal cultures

    Author : Gvido Cebers; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : glutamate; AMPA; cerebellar granule cells; cortical cells; cyclothiazide; AP-1; transcription factors; receptor desensitization; Ca2 ; neurotoxicity; 45Ca2 uptake; apoptosis; ischemia; muscarinic; carbachol;

    Abstract : Primary neuronal cultures were used to investigate the properties of AMPA receptors and functional consequences of their activation, as well as AMPA receptor desensitization and possibilities for its modulation. We established the presence and spontaneous functional activity of AMPA receptors in cerebellar granule and cortical cell cultures. READ MORE

  5. 5. Gene regulation, intracellular signaling and membrane traffic : studies in primary human skeletal muscle cultures

    Author : Lubna Al-Khalili; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Skeletal muscle cultures; insulin signal transduction; glucose transport; GLUT4; RNAi; Na ; K -ATPase; MEF2;

    Abstract : Skeletal muscle is an insulin sensitive organ and plays a major role in whole body electrolyte and substrate homeostasis in the post prandial state. Impaired insulin action in skeletal muscle may lead to the pathological condition of insulin resistance. READ MORE
