  1. 16. PACAP and orphanin FQ/nociceptin -Distribution, importance and regulation in sensory neurons and spinal cord

    Author : Lina Pettersson; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; neuropsychology; Neurology; trk; spinal cord; sensory neuron; rat; PAC1; PACAP; ORL1; OFQ N; neurotrophin; neuropeptide; nerve transection; nerve compression; inflammatory pain; BDNF; DRG;

    Abstract : Neuropeptide expression in the nervous system is abundant and plastic, and an altered expression after injury is an example of a functional response, helping the neuron to cope with adverse changes, and involves effects on differentiation, synthesis, repair/regeneration, survival, and modulation of signal transmission. I have investigated the distribution/expression of the neuropeptides, orphanin FQ/nociceptin (OFQ/N) and pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide (PACAP), under normal conditions, in response to nerve injuries, and also studied sensory responses in mice deficient for the PAC1 receptor (PAC1-/-). 2. 17. Aspects of the human enteric nervous system : A study of the normal development and of Hirschsprung's disease

    Author : Tomas Wester; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Surgery; enteric nervous system; Hirschsprung s disease; intestinal neuronal dysplasia; neuron density; nitric oxide; bcl-2; interstitial cells of Cajal; c-kit; human; fetal; development; Kirurgi; Surgery; Kirurgi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Abstract : Thirty patients with Hirschsprung's disease (HD) who underwent Rehbein's anterior resection, using a circular stapler to perform the anastomosis, were evaluated retrospectively. The postoperative complication rate and long-term functional outcome were similar to those reported by other investigators using the same and other techniques. READ MORE

  3. 18. Stem Cell Transplantation in Dorsal Root Injury

    Author : Carl Trolle; Elena Kozlova; Niklas Marklund; Karin Nordström; Michael Andäng; Mårten Risling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sensory Neuron; Regeneration; Spinal Root; Stem Cell; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : After traumatic injuries to the brachial plexus there is a risk that one or more of the spinal roots are torn from the spinal cord, known as avulsion injury. This often leads to paralysis and chronic pain, notoriously difficult to treat with current pharmacotherapy. READ MORE

  4. 19. My first-passage : target search in physics and biology

    Author : Markus Nyberg; Ludvig Lizana; Martin Rosvall; Carlos Mejia-Monasterio; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; first-passage; mean first-passage time; mean first-arrival time; random walk; diffusion; zero-crossing; persistence; survival probability; network; resetting; teoretisk fysik; Theoretical Physics;

    Abstract : Random walks and diffusing particles have been a corner stone in modelling the random motion of a varying quantity with applications spanning over many research fields. And in most of the applications one can ask a question related to when something happened for the first time. That is, a first-passage problem. READ MORE

  5. 20. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis – A Study in Transgenic Mice

    Author : Hanna Wootz; Dan Lindholm; Håkan Aldskogius; Christopher Fowler; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurosciences; ALS; Caspase; Caspase-12; Cathepsin; Cystatin; ER stress; Motor neuron; Neurodegeneration; Sod1; XIAP; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease with an incidence of 1.5-2.7/100000 people/year. Today there is no cure for the disease and only symptomatic treatments are available. READ MORE
