  1. 21. Developmental Neurotoxicity Testing Using In vitro Approaches

    Author : Helena Högberg; Anna Price; Barbara Cannon; Kevin Crofton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Toxicology; Toxikologi; toxikologi; Toxicology;

    Abstract : There is a great concern about children’s health as the developing brain in foetuses and children is much more vulnerable to injury caused by different classes of chemicals than the adult brain. This vulnerability is partly due to the fact that the adult brain is well protected against chemicals by the blood brain barrier (BBB) and children have increased absorption rates and diminished ability to detoxify many exogenous compounds, in comparison to that of adults. 2. 22. β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA)-induced neurotoxicity : Studies in vitro and in vivo

    Author : Lisa Ersson; Malin Andersson; Eva B Brittebo; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; BMAA; neurotoxin; neurodegeneration; cellular transport; metabolic profiling; protein-association; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxic non-proteinogenic amino acid produced naturally by cyanobacteria, diatoms and dinoflagellates and it has been detected in samples from fresh and marine water from all over the world. It can bioaccumulate in fish and shellfish, and has a potential to biomagnify in a terrestrial food chain. READ MORE

  3. 23. Developmental neurotoxicity of persistent and non-persistent pollutants : Behavioral and neurochemical assessments of a perfluorinated compound, pesticides and interaction effects

    Author : Iwa Lee; Henrik Viberg; Per Eriksson; William Mundy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Brain; Neonatal; Mixtures; Cholinergic system; Organochlorines; Pyrethroids; Organophosphates; Carbamates; Insecticides; PFCs; PFAAs; PFHxS; Endosulfan; Cypermethrin; Chlorpyrifos; Carbaryl; Biology with specialization in Environmental Toxicology; Biologi med inriktning mot miljötoxikologi;

    Abstract : The focus of this thesis was to investigate developmental neurotoxic effects of different persistent and non-persistent environmental pollutants, alone or in binary mixtures, when exposure occurs during a critical period of brain development, in mice. The compounds investigated included a perfluorinated compound, perfluorohexane sulphonate (PFHxS), and four different pesticides, endosulfan, cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos and carbaryl. READ MORE

  4. 24. Neurotoxicity after poisonings with organophosphate pesticides in Nicaragua

    Author : Jamilette Miranda; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : In Nicaragua rates of acute human poisonings caused by pesticides, in spite of significant underreporting, are among the highest in the world. Hence the unrestricted availability of pesticides and their misuse, as well as the continuous increase in annual imports of pesticides are reasons for public health concern. READ MORE

  5. 25. Neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y and neural progenitor C17.2 cell lines as models for neurotoxicological studies

    Author : Jessica Lundqvist; Anna Forsby; Åsa Fex Svenningsen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SH-SY5Y; C17.2; in vitro neurotoxicity; cell culture conditions; biomarkers; in vitro developmental neurotoxicity; whole genome microarray; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Abstract : We are surrounded by chemicals, thus understanding how exposure to these chemicals affect us during our life is of great social importance. In order to predict human acute toxicity of chemicals, cosmetics or drugs, development of novel in vitro test strategies is required. READ MORE
