1. Neutron Irradiation Techniques
Abstract : The He-3 “crisis” has become a fact in the last decade and large scale neutron detectors based on He-3 technologies have become unaffordable. This new He-3 reality has resulted in a major effort worldwide to develop replacement neutron-detector technologies. READ MORE

2. A Fast Pixelated Thermal-Neutron Detector
Abstract : This thesis presents the study of a position-sensitive scintillation-based detector called the Solid-State Neutron Detector (SoNDe). SoNDe is being developed for cold- and thermal-neutron detection at the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) instrument SKADI at the European Spallation Source (ESS), currently under construction in Lund, Sweden. 3. Boron neutron capture therapy : Synthesis of boronated amines- and DNA intercalating agents for potential use in cancer therapy
Abstract : Boron Neutron Capture Therapy is a binary cancer treatment modality, involving the delivery of a suitable boron compound to tumour cells followed by irradiation of the tumour by thermal neutrons. Boronated agents can selectively be delivered to tumour cells either directly with tumour-specific boron compounds, or by use of targeting strategies. READ MORE

4. A Source-Based Test-Bed for Fast-Neutron Irradiation
Abstract : The "3He crisis" has resulted in a major effort worldwide to develop replacement neutron-detector technologies. Such technologies are in their infancy and need to be thoroughly tested before becoming mainstream. Neutron sources for controlled irradiation include accelerators, nuclear reactors and radioactive sources. READ MORE

5. Raman Scattering and Neutron Diffraction Studies of Manganites and Cuprates
Abstract : This thesis is devoted to experimental studies of two classes of strongly correlated transition metal oxides, namely cuprates and manganite perovskites. Manganites generally display complex phase diagrams, including the so-called colossal magnetoresistance effect. READ MORE
