1. Thorium fuels for light water reactors - steps towards commercialization
Abstract : Thorium-containing nuclear fuel is proposed as a means of gaining a number of benefits in the operation of light water reactors, some related to the nuclear properties of thorium and some related to the material properties of thorium dioxide. This thesis aims to investigate some of these benefits and to widen the knowledge base on thorium fuel behaviour, in order to pave the way for its commercial use. READ MORE

2. Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis applied to LWR neutronic and thermal-hydraulic calculations
Abstract : The deterministic modeling of LWRs begins with the computation of energy‐collapsed and homogenizedmacroscopic cross‐sections by means of a lattice code. Once these parameters are functionalized as a functionof the reactor state variables and discretized in space, they are used as input variables by core simulators inorder to calculate the spatial distribution of the neutron flux and thus, the spatial distribution of the power. 3. Development of New Monte Carlo Methods in Reactor Physics : Criticality, Non-Linear Steady-State and Burnup Problems
Abstract : The Monte Carlo method is, practically, the only approach capable of giving detail insight into complex neutron transport problems. In reactor physics, the method has been used mainly for determining the keff in criticality calculations. READ MORE

4. Development of fine-mesh methodologies for coupled calculations in Light Water Reactors
Abstract : This thesis presents fine-mesh multiphysics methodologies and algorithms for numerical predictions of the behavior of Light Water Reactor (LWR) cores. The multiphysics aspects cover the distribution of neutrons, the fluid flow of the coolant and the conjugate heat transfer between the solid fuel pins and the fluid coolant. READ MORE
